Dissatisfied Mac Customer - Double Upgrade Pricing

I'm a little confused.

A little over a year ago, I believe, I paid to upgrade from the Windows version of Logos to the Mac version. I have never really been happy with the Mac version because it is so underdeveloped. I paid for the upgrade in the hopes that the product would continue to be developed.

From what I understand, the development of the product I paid for has been dropped and a new product (Logos 4) has replaced it. It doesn't make any sense that I had to pay for this upgrade, since I had already paid for the poorly written, underdeveloped initial Mac version.

I would like to speak with someone about this, if possible.

I have used Libronix/Logos Bible Software for many years and have found it to be the best product available for my work as a preaching/teaching pastor.

Just over a year ago, I made the switch to Mac, knowing that it was a new development for Logos. I knew that the Mac software was not fully developed. In December I upgraded to Logos 4 and made a substantial investment in an expanded library, knowing that Logos 4 for Mac was in alpha development. It was a calculated risk, which I am glad I took. Once fully developed the L4 for Mac will be an excellent product.

Why did I upgrade and expand now?

1. I wanted to support Logos in this venture and let them know that many of us support them in this project.

2. I consider it a long term investment in my ministry. Investments take time to develop. Jesus spoke about planting seeds.

3. Logos has proven themselves to me. I appreciate their commitment to making Bible Study accessible to all.

4. I am enjoying being a part of the alpha development. Yes, it is time consuming and at time frustrating, but it is also educational and fun.

I encourage you to stick with Logos for the long-haul. I believe you will be glad you did.

You should call support and talk to them. I sent an email stating my dissatisfaction and I think something got lost in the impersonal nature of the medium. Logos is terribly busy with the new release right now but my experience is that they do listen and will try to understand if you are dissatisfied with their product. If you don't feel you are being understood you can even ask to speak with Bob. It has been mentioned before that he will get involved if customer satisfaction is truly at risk. I wouldn't use that avenue lightly but it is available.

One other thought Alex, do you realize that the new engine is free? The new L4Mac is still alpha, but the upgrade prices includes new features, and new resources. This may or may not help, but Logos customer support is stellar and I suggest you start there.

1. I did not realize that I didn't have to pay for the upgrade. The only option I saw on the Logos site was a paid upgrade. I may just request a refund, unless the resources available seem worth the extra $100.

2. When I sent an email to Customer Service, I got an auto reply telling me to ask my question in the forum. They basically said that I wouldn't get a reply. That's why I posted here. Would it be best to send my inquiry to a particular email address other than the customer service? Or would it be best to call?

I understand your frustration. Follow the link Jeremiah included in his second post, and especially read the post by Bob Pritchett, CEO of Logos. Additionally, some months back Bob also made a lengthy post concerning the Mac version. The original Mac version was based on an older version of the Libronix engine, which is the reason development has stopped on that version at 1.2.2. Logos had worked for several years to develop that initial Mac version. The $60 (I believe) charge was to recover some of the huge development costs.

In L4 the Mac and Windows versions share the same base code. The Mac Development Team is now working to develop the interface to make that code functional on the Mac. The upgrade cost is not for the engine. The engine is free for both Mac and Windows. The charge is for additional resources, some of which will only work with L4.

L4 Mac is now in the Alpha testing stage of development (more about that in a moment). You have some options. 1) You can remain pat with the resources you have now and upgrade with the free L4 Mac engine. 2) You can take one of the generous upgrade offers that now exist (until the end of the month).

L4 Mac is now in Alpha. That means that it is a test application. Some features have not yet been implemented, it has bugs (big ones), it can crash unexpectedly, or freeze. However, you can use the Windows version with the same license. You also have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of development for the Mac. You can test, submit bug reports, and post your logs. This will speed Mac development and give you the satisfaction of knowing that you have made a positive contribution to someone's Bible study experience.

It would be best to post here on this forum. Customer Service personnel are not in the loop on Mac development, but the Mac Development Team is active here. There are also some very knowledgeable L4 Mac users here who provide abundant help. Occasionally a Windows user wanders in, usually by mistake, and they sometimes may even offer so valuable advice. resources available in logos 4 mac are worthy of the upgrade, in the Mac version you can explore almost all of them, but we are still below in the UI.

You can use, as many of us do, the windows version under parallels or boot camp, that will give you an idea of what you invested in.

I bought the Original Mac Logos in the hopes that it would be as full featured as the Windows version. It never materialized. I do all of my work on a Mac. Period. When I buy a Mac product -- I don't want to boot into Parallels, I don't want to go to Bootcamp, etc. I want to work in OS X with all the OS X features I love.

I really felt cheated with Libronix for Mac. Seeing what goodies were in Logos 4 and now knowing that the Mac was in Alpha I bought Logos 4 as well and decided to use it on a PC while the Mac Alpha got sorted out. I have higher hopes for Logos 4 for Mac than the sad demise of Libronix / Mac. Seeing the progress has been encouraging, and I can stand Vista long enough for Bible study and then shoot off my work to the Mac for actual editing work.

I cannot wait to get rid of this Windows laptop once L4 / Mac is close to Beta form. I feel encouraged and have put aside the disappointment of L3 / Mac -- because the real value of my L3 purchase was really the resources -- which stay with you forever.

Keep up the good work on Logos4: Mac!

Jack's summary is excellent and everyone has made some good suggestions. I can only add one point. Since L4win and L4mac share all the same base code and since they are designed to sync, all the work we do in the Windows version will be directly available in our Mac version. So unlike other options to use a Windwos version, we will not have to manually move our notes over. We will not have to do anything to make a seamless transition from L4win to L4mac. I personally am encouraged by this part of the design :-)

Welcome back. I've missed you. It's all Rosie's fault. She kept posting the superb recommendations for improving L4, and I was adding my support. There have also been some issues reported that I felt I could make a positive contribution.
