Basic Stuff

Hello everyone:

You all have been such a wealth of information that I thought I would beg of your time once again. I just purchased Scholars Silver and have made it through the tutorials but without a manual, I think I am missing some "basic" navigation rules. Things that I would consider to be very common and I'm sure Logos offers it (I hope), but can't figure out how to do the following ...

Is there a back button? If I highlight a text or accidentally close a window, for example and change my mind, I would like to be able to use a back button to erase what I just did. Can I?
When I go to highlight text, I would have assumed it would have been as simple as right-clicking and selecting "highlight". The only way I see to do it is by opening up Tools and selecting "highlight". Please tell me there is an easier way . Any shortcuts?

I am desperately trying to find how to take a verse and categorize it as such.

Again, I can only assume (and pray) that these are "basic" necessities of any Bible software and hope it is with Logos as well but can't find out (yet) how to do it.

When you right click you are adding a new note to a note file that already exists. There are modifications coming that will make it easier to have multiple note files available from a right click.

Under help, you will find that there is an "undo" - Alt+backspace. There is no back button per se.

Again, if you check under help, there is an ALT-K shortcut. Some modifications to highlighting are in the current beta version if I recall correctly.

I'm trying to find the right place to put my question. I have installed L4 Mac on Macbook. I have now installed Windows 7 and VMware. Must I now download all my books again including L4 Scholars Library?

Where do I find the appropriate files to download. The list in My Account are obviously for the Alpha version.

There is a Back button in resource panels, to go back to the previous place you were looking at in them:

But I don't think that's what you're talking about. That's for navigation only. I think you're asking about Undo. You can undo most actions, as Martha pointed out, by pressing Alt+Backspace. Ctrl+Z does the same thing. Undo doesn't undo closing a window, though. (It doesn't in any Windows application I know.) And for now, Undo also doesn't work if you accidentally delete a user-generated file such as a Notes file, Handouts, a Guide template, etc. However you can undo actions done within each of those object types (deleting an individual note within a notes file, for example).

Undo also currently does not undo highlighting (I'll report that, as I think it should). However, if you select some highlighted text and click Erase on the Highlighting panel, it will remove the highlighting.

Ctrl+K will highlight using the last highlighting color or emphasis style you selected. You do have to open Tools | Highlighting to select a color or emphasis style, though. But if you tend to do yours all in one color you won't have to keep the highlighting panel open. If you use multiple colors, what some people like to do is float the Highlighting panel (right click on its Tab and choose "Open in a floating window"), then resize it as narrow as you want so as to be unobtrusive, then pin it to stay on top using the free utility DeskPins, which you can download from http://users.forthnet.gr/pat/efotinis/programs/deskpins.html.

The "captioned note" you are referring to is actually a "Notes file" in which you can keep multiple notes - for many people this is all they'll need. One notes file for all their many notes on their Bible. You'd title it something like "My notes"; each note within this file is linked to a particular verse. But you might want multiple notes files if you are taking notes for different purposes: for Sunday School class, personal use, sermon prep for a particular sermon, whatever... You can organize your notes files into hierarchies using Favorites folders if you want. Currently the right-click "Add a note to" command will only let you add a note to the currently open notes file (or the most recently opened one, if none is open). But in a future release we should be able to select which notes file to add the note to.

You could use different highlighting colors for you different categories, but then you might run out of colors if you've got lots of categories, and you might not remember the association between color and category. Another way of doing what you want to do would be to set up a Notes file called Categories. Then to tag a particular verse with a category, right click on its verse number, choose "Add a note to "Categories"", click below the verse reference that got automatically entered into your notes file (if necessary) to edit the text box below, and type in the category. Here's how it might look after doing a few of these:

Note that you could categories some verses under multiple categories this way.

Now once you have this set up, you can filter your Notes file to only those verses that are marked with a particular category. Press Ctrl+F and type in the category you're looking for, and voila.

I'm sure there are other ways you could discover to do useful things with categories. Set up Favorites folders for each of your categories, for example, and drag the verse references related to these categories into the folders (unfortunately I can't test how this might work for you right now because Favorites folders are temporarily broken in the beta which I'm using). But that's enough to get you started.

Just to clarify - You can have the option to add a note to more than one note file--as long as each note file is open. Otherwise, it just shows the last used note file when you right click.

I was just thinking about opening the highlighting tool box. moving the sider to the top bar "where" the command entry box is. When there is that "button" just click it and open the highlighting and it will stay and just x out of it when done. the quick opener is still there.

Ah, good point! I guess I'd never realized that or had forgotten. What you can't do, though, and would be nice, is to add a note to a Notes file that isn't open, like you can in Logos 3. Also, Logos 3 lets you choose whether you want to add the note to the selection, the verse (or verse range) that it's enclosed within, or the Article (pericope) it's within. I think Notes need a lot of work in L4, and I think the Logos developers are aware of that.

I see. I used L3 for about a month before L4 came out so I never developed much of a working knowledge of it. I'm looking forward to the notes function being much improved.

These are the very areas that are troubling me. It should be so easy to right click and highlight or add a note to that particular verse/selection. I do hope this gets a LOT of work done on it. L3 was great in these areas.

Welcome to L4. The most simple and safe procedure is to allow L4 to download those resources again. The Windows version will be faster than the Mac was, as it has more optimization at this point.

Have you downloaded the L4 Setup file? You just run that and everything will follow.

BTW: There is an L4 for Mac Forum. You should join us over there.

To add the Highlight or any books that you regularly use to the shortcut bar (to the right of the command bar), go to http://www.logos.com/videos and watch the Drag & Drop Shortcuts video to see how to add the shortcuts. I have added shortcuts to Highlighting, Collections, and several books that I reference frequently. It makes opening these a one click process.

If you accidentally close a window, say you click on a different layout when you meant to save the layout you were creating, you should see a snapshot of your recent layout in the layout dropdown. Click this and it will reload your layout and resources.

Hey, you guys have been great as always. I really appreciate this Blog and the great help I've received so far. I've implemented many of your ideas and I'm with you in cheering on tech support to gain a more user friendly system to make simple changes to text (such as highlighting and annotating).
