From the recent discussions it seems apparent that Logos is still sorting out how journals will be bundled and which ones will be available. I haven't read all the related posts so forgive me if this is redundant, but I think it might be helpful to have a discussion about how we would use journals in Logos. I have seen lots of suggestions about which journals to include, but an understanding of how we intend to use the journals might be helpful to Phil Gons and others who are deciding how to proceed with future journal acquisitions and bundling.
Personally, I currently use ATLA and other journal searches through my university website to access full text journal articles. I don't know that I have ever read a journal from cover to cover, I just read specific articles related to my research. Although as I finish school I plan to have a lot more time for reading. I expect that most of my use of journals will be for searches and not for reading cover to cover. Therefore, I am interested in acquiring as many journals related to my field of study as possible. So that when I discover an article I want to read, I can read it in my Logos library.
Also, it is exciting to me to think about clicking a footnote in a book and then being able to click the hyperlink and read the article in Logos.
This being said, I would like to eventually acquire most of the journals that Logos has available. However, I am on a small budget. Every year I have a certain amount I can spend and I plan for what additions I will make to my library. So I want the discounted price of bundles. I certainly cannot afford to purchase each journal individually. However, I can't afford massive bundles either. So my preference would be to see medium size bundles that offer bundle size discounts with affordable prices. This would allow me to add incrementally to my library.
Related to this issue is the Logos practice of pre-pub pricing and sales. I understand why they use the sales tactics that they do. The tactics work and produce sales. However, it makes it difficult for those of us who are not financially able to make a large purchase without planning and saving. I would like to purchase the master journal bundle, but I am waiting to see how it pans out. If I decide to wait and purchase something else this year, I hate to think I will pay 25-30% more next year because I didn't buy it in pre-pub. I know there are payment plans, but I still can only use those within my budget. So I would like to see more stable pricing.
