IOS 8 & logos flashcards looses audio icon
Hi,
I upgraded to IOS 8 about a month ago, maybe a week less than that.
When I first updated, flashcards would simply crash and give me a home screen.
after a few weeks it stopped doing that, and I thought 'all is well' although it didn't want to pronounce the word right away and after several button pushes would pronounce part of the word, or multiple overlaps of the word.
But since a few days ago I no longer have an audio icon to tell it to pronounce the word. at all. I have not updated flashcards.
I have an I phone 4s with IOS version 8.0.2
anyone else having this problem?
Not happy at all with Apple right now.

The missing audio icon is a known issue with Flashcards and iOS 8.x and we don't yet have a fix. Sorry for the inconvenience.

IOS8 has wraked havoc on my iphone.
It now overheats, wont respond to the touch screen, sends itself into zoom mode, SIRI comes on without prompting. This is the second time Apple has really botched an upgrade IMO.
The last time for me was unrecoverable and all of my data was lost. They told me because my Iphone was backed up locally on my computer (the only place it does a full backup) and not the cloud, that they couldn't help me with data recovery.
I have been anxiously awaiting Yosemite, but now with this, I am apprehensive.
I am beginning to believe that they are somehow changing the third party interface rules and not giving them advance notice so they could release update at same time.
IDK, maybe I'm just over-reacting. I used to be unafraid to upgrade within a day or two or release; naow I am waiting a week or two to see what everyone has to say.

Weird. I haven't heard of anyone else having these problems. What phone do you have?

Does anyone know if progress has been made (by either Apple or Logos) on fixing this?

I hope this can be fixed soon, that would be really nice! I hope it's not a very difficult issue to fix.

This issue was fixed over a month ago in version 1.1.2 - are you running the latest version?

Oh, that's interesting! Well maybe I'm just not doing something right then. I do have the latest version of the flashcards app.
I made a custom set of cards myself, do I have to use a certain column or something for the audio to work? I don't see the audio icon on my custom word list.

This is strange... just to be sure can you install the app again from the Apple Store and see if the audio icons appear?

Just for clarity, I am making a custom lbxvl xml file, since I was not able to find any other way to import a large amount of words into word lists along with the sections. And then I am using the "Import Word Lists" command in Logos 6. In my xml file, I am using the column "display" for the hebrew lemma. Should the column be titled something else? With them under the column "display" in my xml file, it shows up under the column "Card Front" in Logos once it's imported. If I switch to using the column "word" in my xml instead of "display" then when I import it into Logos 6, it shows up under the column "Lemma" but then the app shows blank cards. Either way, there is no audio icon. I notice there is a column for Audio in the Logos 6 software. I noticed also that if I make a word list from a hebrew text in logos, the audio icon shows up on the flashcards app for that word list, but not my custom one. When I look at that word list though, the audio column is still empty, so I am a bit confused. Perhaps you can help me?

Ok so this is what I'm trying to do even more specifically. I am trying to make a Vocabulary Word List for the Logos resource Student’s Vocabulary for Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic and I want the sections in the word list to match the sections in the Logos resource.
I've attached my XML file. It imports good and everything works perfectly at the moment, except for the audio. If you want I can send you my .lbxvl xml file so you can take a look at it if you have a chance.

Here is a sample of what my xml looks like at the moment:
<section>
<title>4K</title>
<entry>
<display>אַחֲרוֹן</display>
<gloss xml:lang="en-US">(adj) behind; (adv) last</gloss>
</entry>

I'm not a Word List expert - you might ask on the Logos Desktop forum. It appears that if the audio is missing on Desktop it won't appear on the Flashcards app.

Kevin,
It seems that the place Logos sends people for word lists to use with the flashcard app, https://faithlife.com/introductory-grammar-vocabulary-lists/documents does not contain audio. So how does one get the audio into these files to make the most of the flashcard app?

Kenneth,
Word Lists created with Logos Desktop can be synced to the Flashcards app. As a simple example, please see this screencast - you can create your own. If Word Lists available from the link you refer to don't work for you or don't have audio, I'm not quite sure of the answer at the moment, I'll ask the dev team.

Kevin,
Thanks for your answer.
If I create a word list, say for Philippians, I can get the audio to show on the desktop and in the flashcard app. On the link that I provided has many files for word list for the Greek and Hebrew Grammars that Logos sells. Those have no audio when you open them on the desktop and thus they don't show audio on the flashcard app. So I would like to know how to get the audio to show up on the desktop and then it will sink to the flashcard app.
Thanks for checking on this.

Kenneth,
there's more than one Faithlife group sharing word lists - one you may want to look at might be https://faithlife.com/word-lists-for-flashcards/activity
The source for the word lists for introductory grammars are Libronix vocabulary lists that (I think always, but may be wrong) don't have audio. AFAIK, there's currrently only a manual way of adding it, and I know some users have done this for initial chapters of Mounce's BBG in yet another group https://faithlife.com/basics-of-biblical-greek/activity and another user is currently doing it for a Hebrew grammar.
Hope this helps,
Mick

Yes, this is what I would like to know as well. Certainly there is some documentation on how to use this feature somewhere?

Thanks for your reply. I did not know about the other groups that you pointed out. The one regrading word lists for flashcards seem to be the same as the one I linked too. No audio In the files.
Logos tells us that the audio works and points to these Faithlife groups to get the lists and they don't have audio. Somewhere communication has broken down.
As I said I can get audio in the files for say Philippians. But how to add audio to the other files is what I am trying to ask about and figure out.

But how to add audio to the other files is what I am trying to ask about and figure out.
I know I have a complete NA28 Word List with audio - I think my poor machine had to build this by itself, but it may also be that someone shared it and I can't see it anymore on documents.logos.com. I just shared it with the two groups mentioned.
It is possible to Merge this with another list, such as Mounce BBG, and by using intersection to receive a smaller, curated list with audio.
The use case for this feature seems to be rather joining the vocabulary of say Ephesians and Colossians. The implementation seems to be buggy:
- Card Glosses and Card Fronts are added to one another, even if they are partially identical (giving "God, God; god")
- Counts are added, too (which makes sense only for union and the mutually exclusive addition, not for intersection or difference)
- conversely, Sections and Audio are not added, but kept in the form of the first list - so it's either audio or chapters
In other words, this is not optimal - I collaborated the second list with group Wordlist for Flashcards, in case someone feels free to input the chapters. If Logos were to fix the Merge functionality, this could be a nice way to get audio in an automated way for nearly all lists.
EDIT: I put this as a bug report into the desktop beta forum: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/101702.aspx /EDIT

I saw you linking to https://faithlife.com/introductory-grammar-vocabulary-lists/activity not to https://faithlife.com/word-lists-for-flashcards/activity but anyway. The lists may overlap to a certain extent, because many originated here: https://www.logos.com/training/vocabularylists (note the instructions are for Libronix, not L4/5/6)
