I have noticed this too.
If you have a narrow window, there's not much space within which to place the labels.
My version (Windows, 6.0.0.3700) looks like this, with a two-column layout on a 1280x1024 monitor:
But if i make the window more narrow, i can replicate your results (and even make them worse! [:)]).
