Will it run Logos 4 well?
Hi All! I hope I am not annoying anyone with my question here, but I am seriously considering purchasing a laptop. I really want it to run Logos well, as that is one of my reasons to purchase it.
Our tech here at Adobe recommends the following laptop:
DELL Vostro 1520 (464-2008 - 58976P) NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T6670(2.20GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 3GB Memory DDR2 800 250GB HDD 7200rpm Dual layer DVD Burner Intel GMA 4500MHD
What do you all think? Will it work? Thanks in advance for any advice you could give me!

I would recommend at least 4GB of RAM and a x64 version of Windows 7 for L4.
I just upgraded to 4GB and Win7 x64 Home Premium and have a noticeable increase in performance versus the old 2GB and Vista x32 Home Premium.
The Intel GMA 4500MHD might be a bit of a speed bump though. Integrated graphics chips will not handle L4 as well as a dedicated graphics card (most laptops have an integrated chip).
My main system is a 1.5 year old AMD Turion system with a nVidia m7700 integrated graphics chip. The large scale screen re-draws have a bit of lag, but L4 is quite usable on this system.
Hopefully someone else on this board has run L4 on the Intel GMA 4500MHD and can let you know how it performs in real life in regards to L4.

One of the things that keeps coming up on the forum is the need for a fast graphic's card - at least 1gb in memory. This is a graphic intensive program.

Your specs are very much like my laptop. Except I have 4 GB of RAM and run Win7 64 bit. You don't mention OS, but you need 64 bit to address 4 GB of RAM. I also do not have a 7200 rpm HDD. Mine is just 5400. That said, mine runs well. There is a little lag with a lot of resources open at once. But I seldom have more than 3 or 4 so no problem. Also notes show some lag when they get a little long, more than 4 lines. You should be fine. I recommend that you install Logos 4 first, before installing anything else. Get it running first. I did four installs on three computers. The one where I installed after having installed lots of stuff was the slowest. When I put it on my laptop after a clean install of Windows, I installed most of my other stuff first. Then I put Logos 4 and it was slow. My last PC I did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit and put Logos on first before anything else and it runs best of all three machines. I later did a fresh install of Windows on the machine I currently usuing (the one I did my first install) and it is running quite well. Don't know if this is placebo effect or a real issue. But it can't hurt since you will be buying new.

I guess I will have to settle for a little less than lightning fast! The laptops with dedicated graphic cards are a little out of my budget range.
At this point I suppose anything will perform better than my 7 year old PC with only 1 GIG of RAM and Pentium 4.
Thanks for the advice guys! I'll still be looking around for something with a good graphics card.

Not to shoot Intel or anything, I would recommend a system with either and ATI/AMD or nVidia graphics chip if you can swing it. Intel has been a behind the curve when it comes to GPUs.
Being a recovering gaming rig addict, I have tried both ATI/AMD and nVidia graphics and my 2cents is to go with nVidia. They have (in my experience) been quicker to respond to quirks in their drivers as compared to ATI/AMD. I have also run across quirks in ATI/AMD products (mind you, this is not recently since I haven't bought a dedicated card in several years) when coupled with Intel CPUs. Hopefully they have fixed this issue.
I am biased, because both of my systems have integrated nVidia chips (m7700 in the laptop and m9400 on the nettop) and I haven't used an ATI/AMD GPU for over 3 years. nVidia's mobile 9400 packs quite a punch for the size/power, but coupled with a dual core Atom processor (my nettop), which can still handle most programs, is brought to its knees by L4.
This is the tricky thing with L4, it requires a good balance from all of your hardware. This is the first program of its kind that I have seen. Normally either your CPU or your GPU (depending on the application) can muscle its way through, but L4 wants it all.
I'm praying that through the continuing development cycle, the code gets leaner so that more people can easily use this software, because the potential is tremendous, but right now it is (in my opinion) a bit much to almost require your customers to either be well versed geeks, or have to hit customer service and the forums, just to get your software to work as advertised.
To be honest, I do not know anyone in my area who would be able to use L4 due to the steep requirements (hardware and computer knowledge), which is a pity since I would love to turn people to this incredible piece of software and help Logos be successful.
