Broken update with L6 resources

When trying to update ~130 resources from the L6 update, most seemed to work fine. But now there is a recurring dialog warning, saying

Some books that had been downloaded cannot be found on this device. Would you like to download these books again?

Accepting this download apparently starts a download but my network activity stops within seconds and no resources are changed. Of course, the dialog appears next time I open the app (Verbum).

Furthermore, the update section shows 6 resources to update. But when I select Update All, my network indicator keeps spinning but none of the resources update even after several hours.

I am debating just deleting the app and reinstalling. But I have a lot of local resources, and am also concerned the issue I am seeing will also affect the full redownloads.

Any insight would be appreciated. If any developers would like more information I'd be happy to provide.

I am running 1st generation iPad, 64GB (1.8GB available), iOS 8.1.

How many downloaded resources do you have? How much space is the app taking up on your device?

A first generation iPad is incapable of running iOS 8.1. Did you mean a first generation iPad Air?

Thanks for responding. I have approximatey 450 local resources. Before attempting this resource update the total size of app/data was between 4 and 5 GB. Now Verbum does not even show up in the Manage Storage list.

I probably misspoke then about iPad model. It is earlier than iPad 2 for sure. But perhaps that's all I can say. Total/available space correct.

On the devices page I got a big surprise. There are 10[!] devices listed there, but all but 3 are either old out of service devices, or old names for current devices.

That is more than I recommend, but not outrageous. The app works best when it is lean and mean... I have less than 100 resources downloaded.

<scratches head> Huh? You absolutely can't have an iPad "earlier than iPad 2" and also be running iOS 8. Or iOS7. Or iOS6.

The first iPad is referred to as a "first generation" or "original" iPad. It was released in January 2010. The highest version of iOS it can install is 5.1.1. Sales ceased in March 2011.

The second iPad is referred to as a "second generation" or "iPad 2." It was released new in March 2011, although it was continued to be sold as new (in the 16 GB variety only) until earlier this year. The 64 GB version was discontinued being sold in March 2012.

Logos seems to have troubles when Apple makes major changes in iOS (i.e. 6 to 7 to 8).

I am reluctant to tell you what I am about to tell you... but I will anyways. [:o]

For reasons both logos and non-logos related, I performed a COMPLETE wipe of my iPad last year and this year when I upgraded iOS. If you aren't opposed to that and have the time, it might be worth your effort. FWIW - 1.8 GB isn' very much free space. You should leave more space available on your device for performance reasons.

You should delete all of your old devices from above. You should also try to figure out which of the duplicates to delete. If you end up wiping your device, I would delete them all and start fresh.

I am embarrassed by my own ineptitude in versioning my iPad. But it may not matter. I dug deep down into the Manage storage list, and found Verbum at 60 some MB. That's megabytes. My guess is that the update downloads every resource before switching the registry[?] information and deleting the old resources. And it simply ran out of room. Not sure what the 1.8 GB stood for but guessing some artifact.

Anyway I bit the bullet and deleted/reintalled the app. Before getting resources I now had ~10GB of space. I will take your advice about local resources...should be able to half their number with minimal issues.

So far so good. Whole device is much better behaved.

Some lessons learned: Free space is good. Large multiresource updates might be better done piecemeal rather than all at once. Prioritize local resources more carefully.

I am curious as to why my whole previous installation took up ~8GB, whereas my new one with still half the resources takes up only 1.9GB. My notes, favorites, reading plans etc all seem intact. Guessing a caching issue. I hope others find this discussion useful, thanks again Alabama24 for the feedback and assistance.

I love iOS and the Logos mobile app... Something between the two doesn't always play nicely, especially when the device gets updated. I KNOW that on at least two occasions that iOS did not release space from the Logos mobile app. I have been a beta tester for a couple of years and so I expect more glitches than most users should expect.

Sometimes people take umbrage at my strong recommendation that users be judicious in their amount of "offline" resources... This is one of the reasons I am so vocal in warning users against large library downloads. 2 GB seems more than reasonable. [Y]
