Declining invitations

I appear to have been invited to join groups by people I do not know and groups I do not want to join or follow. These appear, along with groups I am a member of or following, in the left hand panel. I do not want to see these. Is there any way to make them disappear, and/or to decline the invitation without having to send a message to some person I really do not know?

I believe if you just hit decline that is all it does, I do not believe a message gets sent.  I don't really have a way to test this unless you would like me to send you a group invite that I expect for you to decline and we can test it together.  Let me know.
