Getting a machine w/SSD for Logos? Buy the biggest drive you can find

Admittedly, I've got a big library.  However, I've come to the end of what I can take off my 128GB Win8.1 Laptop and now can't free up enough space to complete an index.  It will be a couple months before I can afford to upgrade to a 512GB Surface Pro 3...wish Samsung had offered a larger SSD when I bought this ATIV Book 9 Pro, as I love it's massive resolution screen (3,200 x 1,800) for Logos.

If you look at the drive space analysis graph below, the Logos index files are the large red (and long blue) blocks.  While Logos says I need to free up at least 1 GB of space to complete an index, I suspect I need quite a bit more space than that ... the partial index files are about 20GB each.

Logos runs great on an SSD ... just go for the deep end of the pool when you first buy your machine, and get the biggest drive you can possibly find.  Eventually, you will need it.

abondservant my Library is roughly the same size as yours... and if Logos is the only thing on your computer (lets say Logos, MS Office, and a minimal amount of snapshots) 128GB will be more than enough. But if we assume he has only one computer, that may well not be remotely enough. I have a 512GB SSD on my MacBook Pro I have less than 30 GB of space left.

You might google around a bit. I bought the earlier ATIV 700T Windows tablet and found instructions to upgrade on a mobile computing site. Upgraded to a 256 and mirrored the drive. A little nerve wracking working a piece of plastic under and around the screen on the new tablet to pop it off but works great. Not all of them can be upgraded but some can. Might be more economical than getting a new tablet.

That is a very valid point. I once said that 2TB would be far more than I would ever need on the workstation (not server). Now, the 2TB is suffocating, another 1TB has given up long ago, and now I'm moving files from 1 drive to another just to free up some space. Lol

I do always partition my drives though, with a 250GB system partition, with will probably change to 500GB in the future.

I have over 16,000 resources and still have 123 GB free on my 256 GB surface pro 3.

Wait a minute. Did I read this right? You have over 16,000 Logos resources?

Wow, I thought that my library was getting kind of heavy with 5,500. [:)]

I feel your pain! I have 48.3GB in my Logos folder and another 14.8 in my Libronix folder.

I just ordered a new laptop but I haven't gotten an mSata drive for it yet. I'm thinking 512GB is a good balance between price and size. I'm waiting to see how things shake out on Black Friday-Cyber Monday.

12K, not counting the videos/etc that I no longer keep on my machine.

I searched around today, and located a 512GB M.2 2280 drive sold in Australia that is compatible with my current Samsung NP940X3G-K01US.  More importantly, I also found a USB 3.0 drive enclosure for that odd SSD interface so I could clone it.  It is not cheap, but is a quarter of the cost of replacing this laptop.  Just wish there was a 1 TB option!

I do not know if  a clean install and reindex could help, I have over 16k resources and my library index is 12gb, with a resource manager folder of over 60gb.

Certainly. My desktop has a 128gb boot ssd, and a (much faster) 256gb ssd with Logos living on it. Then for the last decades worth of pictures, videos, papers, itunes music, and so forth I have a 5tb raid array set up (better than half used).

My laptop merely has logos and office on it. On a 256gb ssd. Thinking of putting two 256gb ssd's in a raid array (for speed not redundancy) and putting Logos on that.

Any way, my point in asking was to see if his used hard drive space scaled proportionate to mine. The theory being that perhaps there are large amounts of cached web data. However he's about 50% larger in resource and HD space so I don't think thats likely to be the issue. Though some relief may be found by dumping any locally stored mobile ed cache files. I was reading on the forums a while back about someone who had a lot of wasted space due to that. This was prior to 6 however so such things may be handled differently.

There are 1tb ssd's out there. I don't know if your machine will support them or not however.

One option for indexing is deleting contents of LibraryIndex folder followed by restarting Windows, which should launch Logos Indexer to build Library Index.  Personally would wait for Indexing to complete before launching Logos.

By the way, noticed 48.8 GB that is not Logos.  May want to see if temporary folder has sizable files that can be deleted.

    Keep Smiling [:)]
