can anyone explain to me why Hosea 2.19 in most of the Bibles, such as Nasb95 NIV84 RSV, is not the same as NJB & New American Bible but is Hosea 2.21?
I did a quick search in my library and one of my results referred to Hosea 2:19 and mentioned it's Hosea 2:21 in LXX.
Lexham English Septuagint has a note at Hos 2:19 explaining that the verse numbers are different in the Hebrew bible (i.e. v19 in English bibles is v21 in the Hebrew bible).
Hope that helps!
EDIT: Welcome to the forums, Ronald.
Your best bet is probably to look at the Introduction in a commentary if you have one. The book of Hosea is probably one of the most difficult in the OT textually, with the result that there is considerable disagreement as to what actually constitutes the text of Hosea. The different versions are using different underlying assumptions about the text. I would seriously suggest you look at the introduction in a decent commentary, though, for a proper explanation. Good commentaries generally have a section in them about the text of the book in question, and this is particularly true with Hosea. I did have a look at a couple of the good ones, but neither of them had anything sufficiently succinct to paste into a forum post.
For those with strong views about versions, textual criticism, etc - I'm trying to help Ronald here, not make a theological point or start a version war!
