Sabbath Day

Here's a pretty basic question (I'm assuming). Without getting into a huge debate about the which day is actually the Sabbath Day, I wanted to search out my library to see various views on this topic. However, after having ran several searches in the Search tool, I have yet to come up with good information from my commentaries. How would any of you go about doing a search on a topic like this that may not be as easy to search on as other topics (i.e. Jesus, tabernacle, salvation, etc)?

For me personally, as a very first step, I would start by reading a book such as "Perspectives on the Sabbath". It is available through Vyrso (which will integrate with Logos) here: https://vyrso.com/product/39450/perspectives-on-the-sabbath

I have read a couple of these books (not this particular one) and recommend them because each author gives their view and the other authors are given time to respectfully give their counterpoints to each view.

If you're reading any of the "multiple perspective" books make sure you read some reviews on them. Many times you will find that one or more of the perspectives is not well explained by a contributor or that an important viewpoint is left out. These books are absolutely worthwhile but make sure you know each one's strengths and weaknesses.

I would think a Monograph ore than a commentary would discuss the viewpoints of the Sabbath. Did you try a Library Search 'title:Sabbath'? I saw some interesting titles you may have. One that looked best on cursory review, Tabletalk Magazine June 2011 has the major themes of their issue on 4 views of the Sabbath, with some notable authors writing them. Articles are "Defining the Debate", "Seventh-Day Sabbath", "Puritan Sabbath", "Lutheran Sabbath", "Fulfilled Sabbath".

I assume that you are trying to answer the question, "Should Christians observe the Sabbath?" With that in mind would try searches like sabbath NEAR "new testament" or sabbath NEAR christian. The basic idea is to think of what words authors would be using in discussing the topic that you are searching for. Hope this helps...enjoy your Christmas present!

I have thought about this (Which day is actually the Sabbath) also, and determined that most of the research may need to be performed outside of Logos.

The way that I am going to go about it (once I devote the time) will be to consider the various calendars, the shift in time, etc. I'm sure someone or some group has already done the calculations, but I haven't found it yet. Perhaps the Logos Timeline may come into play at some point.

The issues that my surface when finding a document that states the actual day, may be in the documentation of the the methods used in coming to the conclusion of the day.

Thanks for the replies. I was actually looking more for the 'how to' of searching for Sabbath so Don and Integ hit the nail on the head using the search criteria of, "title," or "Near." I've been using Logos for just a small time so I wasn't familiar with some of these types of searches. However, both returned tons of material for me to dig into so once again, thanks everyone.

If your goal is to establish that the seventh day on our calendar is indeed Saturday, consider consulting the Orthodox Jews. They have kept an unbroken chain of Sabbaths since OT days. If the weekly cycle were off, they would be the first to make an adjustment.

Yes, that would be my goal in doing this. I have even heard somewhere that it was Wednesday (which is completely new), the discussion is usually between Saturday or Sunday. [:)]

I'd spend some time looking directly at every occurrence of sabbath in its scriptural context. As much as it's fascinating to read up what everyone else says that it says, just start reading what the scripture says.

I spent an enormous amount of time on this subject. I still haven't any solid conclusion either, but there's certainly plenty of reason to rest. God's wisdom on that is absolutely perfect.

(Side Note: I'm baffled why Dr. Carson's work on the Sabbath/Lord's Day isn't in Logos.)
