New computer for running Logos 6

My current computer has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 4GB RAM, 64 Bit Operating System, but it seems very slow for running Logos as well as Chrome with a few tabs open.

I am thinking of purchasing a new computer for running my newly expanded Logos 6 and accompanying Library. I am looking at this one: www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-v3-572-15-6-laptop-silver-10071652-pdt.html#cat-0 It has:

Windows 8.1
Intel® Core™ i7-4510U Processor
Memory: 8 GB
Hard drive: 1 TB

Can anybody advise whether that is sufficient? Would I need more than 8GB RAM?

Looking briefly at the link the drive is quoted at 5400 rpm. From experience of many posters this isn't enough to run Logos adequately. I recommend looking at 7200rpm or an SSD.

Don't get Windows 8.1. Get Window 7 instead—it's much better. Windows 8 is a flop (My laptop has Windows 8.1 which is terrible. I'd much rather use my desktop with Windows 7 [64 bit]).

I, Too, prefer the feel of 7. However there are other considerations. It is getting harder to find new machines with 7. Microsoft is steering the industry away from it. The metro style of OS is here to stay, whether we like it or not. Windows 10 is just a revamped version of 8. Consider that 7 will go the way of the dinosaurs (and XP) 1 or 2 years sooner than 8. Remember that when Microsoft dropped support for XP, so did Logos.

I can still go to HP.com, Dell.com or even Walmart and get Windows 7 machines. They are readily available, and I think that if the users refuse Windows 8 it will go away.

And the diehard XP fans didn't want to move to Vista or 7. It was forced on them... just as 8 and 10 will be.

I too like Win8; it fixed a few (not particularly major) issues I was having with 7. I do wish more people would develop/update apps for it.

Back to the original issue, in addition to the original issue, I would consider adding more RAM to your current PC before buying a new one. It's likely that Logos will run pretty well with 8 GB of RAM. But that's your call, of course.

An alternative is to buy a SSd move Logos, all programs and Windows to it. Use the drive that came with the computer to store photos, videos and other documents.

I am partial to Samsung Evo 840.

As always, operating system choice has supporters in all corners. I have Windows 8.1 on my notebook and on two desktop computers and am very pleased with it. Windows 7 is good, but I prefer 8.1.

Personally, I'm not worried about the difference between W7 vs W8.1.

I think I will have an SDD card added to the CD slot. I have Anglican Diamond plus about 8 large commentaries. Any idea how muchspace I'd need for that. Is 240gb enough??

Yes I have a comparable library loaded on a tablet that only has 64 GB. I also have Microsoft office installed, and there is still enough space to index. 240 should do nicely. More than enough for Logos. It's the additional programs and files you must consider.

Yes. It's currently using 14GB. So 250GB would cover it.

If you get a GOOD computer now it will last at least 5 years and probably 7. What to think about is a good processor, at least an Intel i7. Next you want a good hard drive, 500 gig or 1TB 7200 rpm. If it does not come with a SSD drive you can buy one and have a local computer shop put it in. This is always an option because the SSD drives are coming down in price. For your video card get one with 2gig of memory and finally get 16 gig of ram. That is not too much and there again, if you get a computer with less you can add more if it does not have proprietary components. Windows 7 is best right now but with these components it will handle any upgrade windows puts out. Logos with 7000 books will run fast on this type of computer. Most people do not a 1TB hard drive. If you need more than 500 gig you might consider an external drive for pictures, music, and documents.

I have a 2011 macbook pro w 4gb ram and just upgraded to 16 gb for $150.00. Logos 6 performance has improved substantially along with my ability to run other programs simultaneously with it.
