James Moffatt Translation

I would really like to have "James Moffatt Translation" as part of my great Logos Library collection.
It is a Non Denominational and correct translation (meaning) of the original, without being committee sponsored.
I do have it in print and also as a free download online here: https://archive.org/details/historicalnewtes00moffuoft
Sure would be handy as having it included in my Logos Library!
Hope I get the same zeal with my brothers and sisters out there?

The Moffatt translation has been requested quite a bit. And some success with:

But I'm not sure why the translation is an issue. I'd certainly buy it, along with quite a number of historical translations:

Unlike many of Moffatt's other writings, the actual Bible translation is not in the public domain (its 1940s copyright was renewed sometime in the 1970s--I have the exact dates at my desk back in the office). Acquiring this translation would require hunting down the rights-holder who signed the copyright renewal in the 1970s (or whoever acquired the rights from them if they passed away in the time since then) and getting a contract with them (and then it would go to Pre-Pub not Community Pricing). It has been requested a lot--we do want this in Logos eventually.
Just be careful how you use it if you have it in print or pdf in the meantime since it's not public domain yet.

Would love to see this too. I appreciate Moffatt a lot and I think he is a little neglected these days. I do believe the The Historical New Testament from 1901 is public domain. Would be great to see that get the green light.

I haven't experienced all that much of Moffatt's translation, but I have my grandfather's printed copy and refer to it once in a while. It does a nice job with Philemon 6, for instance--where "participation" and "loyal faith" add apt elements before their time. I note that he captures the delay in the dropping of the name Onesimus in v13, too -- just like the original. Nice rendering of Romans 12:1-2, as well.
Long & short: It seems that every time I come to Moffatt for comparison, it offers something uniquely helpful, almost Phillips-like, a few decades before, and without quite as much picturesque expansion.
I see the note about copyright issues, but I hope Moffatt will be pursued by Logos. Surely would be nice to have it in my e-collection.

I would REALLY like to have Faithlife make a concerted effort to have all translations which:
- are used by some denomination as the translation used for the lectionary readings when the lectionary is supported on Logos e.g. Jerusalem Bible
- are the default translation of a resource Logos sells usually in the credits as "unless otherwise noted" e.g. Jerusalem Bible for All is Grace
- are on the official list of a denomination's "acceptable Bibles" ... I know there are cases where this is not possible e.g. the Jehovah's Witnesses' New World Translation
This seems to me to be an absolute minimum requirement.

I really don't quite understand the issue with the James Moffat Bible...Word Search has had it for years. Guessing that there are people at Logos that do not like it!!!

Yes it is.
While it seems the factbook link to it from Moffatt's page is broken, the book is available for years now.

As I understand it, he published the complete new testament and old testament in 1926 and completely revised and published it in 1935.

There is no reason to remove your comments... people new to the forums usually miss the guidelines and simply need to have them brought to their attention. I would also like to see the Moffat translation in Logos.

You should also see how Moffatt translates Mark 16: 14 One very long verse. It contains a lengthy addition (which appears nowhere else), known as the Freer Logion, between the familiar verses 14 and 15.[99] The addition in Codex W is included in James Moffatt's 1935 translation, with a note indicating Moffatt's belief[100] that it was part of the original text of the longer ending "but was excised for some reason at an early date." The Greek Codex W dates from the fourth or fifth century, and is the oldest known Greek ms that sets forth the Longer Ending of Mark chapter 16. There is also a shorter version to the ending of the book of Mark, but it is not well known. I respect Moffatt for adding what he did, as it is in an ancient ms and we should have a right to know about it.
