Collection Rule

If I enter this into a collection rule:

subject:((marriage,famil) ANDNOT subject:church) OR subject:(husband,wife)

I get this book, among others, Biblical Womanhood in the Home.

However, it’s subject field only includes: Christian women--Religious life.; Women--Biblical teaching.

Yet, if I change the rule to:

(subject:(marriage,famil) ANDNOT subject:church) OR subject:(husband,wife)

I do not get the book

Why is the book found in the first rule and not the second?

This is incorrect syntax as the two leading brackets result in "ANDNOT subject:church" being considered as part of the first "subject" filter.

I'm not sure how Logos would parse this but I can understand it getting confused.

Your second string doesn't have that ambiguity.

(1) Is there a correct syntax that includes two different fields with a single search criteria?

eg.: ((subject: OR tag):(marriage,famil))

(2) Can you recommend training course where I can learn to create valid search queries (learning to use OR, AND, ANDNOT in logically correct/valid arguments)?

I understand your syntax but indeed, for reasons I cannot explain, it does produce results difficult to explain. Among results that made sense, I got the Holman New Testament Commentary: Hebrews & James for which neither subjects nor tags include your search terms.

I got 87 title hits using your latest string above, all of which seem relevant although a few may be surprising,
(eg: An ancient interpretation of Leviticus 18:18, David Remembered: Kingship and National Identity in Ancient Israel)

the Leviticus reference would have picked up on the marriage reference and the David reference would have been picked up because the first line of the Library of Congress cataloging data for that volume says "1. David, King of Israel - Family" (which is probably there because of all David's family "issues".... [:-*]

If you are interested, here is the rule I created for family and marriage.

([field title, subject] (marriage,husband,divorce,wife,famil,child,home,mother,father,woman,man)) ANDNOT [field type, title, tag, subject] (commentary,media,encyclopedia,manual,apostolic,Manners,Nicene,perseus,churchfather,map,historychurch,hermeneutic,history,apologetic,churchadministration,systematic,grammar,lexicon,”Bible Notes”)

I had to manually exclude 12 resources and add THE DIVINE LAW OF MARRIAGE. In my library, I ended up with 68 resources in this collection.

If you have any comments on how to improve the rule, I'd certainly like to hear them.

Tried three different rules and this is what I got. The red lines in each picture show the differences in the results

I ran this rule and it returned 62 resources, many of which seemed to be off topic. These include:

Christian Ministries and the Law
Church Administration
Great Doctrines of the Bible
And many more

Learned Subject:Child includes many subjects:

Subject:Parent includes Child rearing

Vyrso eBooks do not have Subjects:

so added Family tag.

For subject exclusions, changed ANDNOT to AND so could verify Logos resources to be excluded:
