Is it possible to highlight a commentary (or other resource) and anchor the resulting note to a Scripture reference but only have a note icon in the Bible (ie. indicate that there is a related note but not highlight the entire verse)?

Also, is it possible to anchor a note to an original language word (or sequence of words) rather than an entire verse?

No - if we add a reference anchor to a highlight, the enter verse is highlighted in Bibles. Questions have been raised regarding this behaviour but it is how it works at the moment.

Yes - select the lemma on the left-hand side of the context menu and create the note against that

Your suggestion isn't working as I would expect. I am in the OT, so I selected a Hebrew lemma and added a note. First, no highlighting appears in the Biblical text. Second, the anchor seems to be to that lemma rather than to this specific instance of that word.

I was hoping to anchor to part of a verse.

Andrew to anchor a note to part of a verse rather than a verse reference or a specific lemma as Graham provided instruction on how to do, having selected the text and brought up the right click menu:

1. Make sure you on the left hand side the word Selection (followed by the text you have selected) has focus.

You will see an orange vertical bar next to the left hand side menu item that currently has focus.

In the example below I had selected the word gracious only from Ps 119:132 so in the left hand side of the menu you can see

Selection gracious (nb. I could have selected a multiple words instead of a single word.)

2. Next on the right hand side you will see the menu item Take a note, under this menu item (not pictured) you will see a list of your most recently used notebooks Click on the name of the notebook you want to assign the note or click on Take a note if you do not wish to assign the note to a specific notebook (personally I don't recommend this option but the choice is yours).

Now to the second part of your question in regards to how to have the text show as highlighted.

3. In tne the note file, select the second icon at the top of the menu bar on the left hand side (a circle with a diagonal line through it. This opens up the highlighting menu and you can choose from the list of options the style of highlighting you want to apply to the selected text.

Notes

a. if you click on the first menu button you can change the style of the note icon. In this example I have change the style of the note icon to a blue paper clip, and hovering over it I can see what I wrote in the note file - "show me your favour'

b. if you do not want an note icon and the ability to write a note but simply want to highlight the word, then at step 2 above click either on the where it says Highlight, click on either the icon of the highlighter to open up the highlighter tool where you can choose the style of highlight you want to apply or click on of the five most recently used highlighting styles shown of the right hand side of the word Highlight. In your text it will look something like the following:
