Trouble with Crossgrade

I purchased the cross grade from Scholar's Library 3 to Scholar's Library 4. When I did the install on my laptop everything went fine, because I have an internet connection. The only internet I have, however, is wireless so I have no internet on my desktop. When I tried to get the crossgrade to work on my desktop it wants a serial number for Logos 4 that I don't know where to find. Help please.

If you have wireless internet on your laptop, isn't it going through a wireless modem? Can you take the plug out from the back of your wireless modem and plug it into your desktop for now, just to give you Internet access on your desktop? Logos without Internet access will be significantly crippled. You won't be able to get updates to resources, sync your layouts and notes and other personalizations between your laptop and desktop, etc. So I'd look for a way to get internet access on the desktop.

If you really can't, then this might require a call to Customer Service. They can give you a serial number you can use to unlock your resources so you can use L4 without the Internet.

One last thing to try, though, before you call CS and wait on hold (I hear wait times are around 15-20 minutes these days, down from a while ago, but still longer than normal), is when you get that prompt for your serial number, Shift+Click on the words "serial number" and a Delete button should appear below it; click on that Delete button and you should be good to go. I'm not sure under which circumstances this trick will work, but it's worth giving it a try.

This can be avoided if you use your laptop installation files as the base for your desktop. Use Method 1 or Method 2 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers

NOTE: you do need to be online to get the installation files.

After this you can update the desktop using Method 3.

The reason I only have wireless is because my apartment complex provides wireless internet, which is awesome because without it the only internet I could get is dial up.

Just an idea for you to consider, in case its of use to you ...

If you have a cellphone (mobile) that can be plugged into your PC via USB, it may be possible to enable internet access over it.

In my case, here in New Zealand, using my cellphone over the GSM networks, I can give my laptop "Internet Access" for up to 10 MB for $1, and then another 10 MB for another 1$, per day, and then they KILL me on data charges after that.

If you have such an option, and are VERY CAREFUL on what amounts of traffic you move, it may work for you.

If you explore this, you need to be aware of a few points, which include at least the following:

- Things like Microsoft Windows Update wanting to download megs of updates
- Flash, antivirus, adobe reader etc ... wanting to download megs of data
- Risk of connecting an "out-of-date" PC with old service packs or updates etc to the Internet
- Logos4 wishing to download all kinds of updates

If you use this option, you only want to start and get past the initial license issues, but not move much data.

Just saying, in case the idea is useful, but there is no free lunch, and you dont want to move much data over a cellphone dataplan, unless you have a good deal already.

In addition to the other suggestions, you could go to an office supply store, or a computer place, and get a wireless USB adapter for your desktop. I have one set up at my house and it works great. Look for a 'g' class, if you can find one, or even better an 'n' class, as these will speed up your downloads over 'b' class wireless adapters. They can be a little finicky, so make sure you follow the installation directions very carefully.

What about connecting the laptop with your desktop by the direct cable connection and trying to share the internet connection of your laptop with your desktop? But still the best solution looks to me what Richard suggests. It will add to your desktop in other things also.
