Logos 9 Initial Impressions

I've been around Logos since series X and my initial impression of this new version is that it is a solid evolution of the software. The big winners in order of importance for me are:

- The New Factbook: If you have a lot of resources, we needed additional ways to mine our book data and I think this is a real value add along with the dataset. I am a bit reluctant as the video states to 'start here', because I like to start with the Biblical text. That being said, I can easily see it's importance and why the emphasis. The ability to run the Factbook on a biblical book and see multiple links to commentary introductions, etc. Big time saver! Well done.

- Greek Grammar Ontology: Another huge time saver! Wonderful! Smile

- The Passage Guide Updates: Particularly the improvements to the commentary section. Boy have we needed this so BAD since version 5.0. I particularly was looking forward to sorting by type and era, but they are all very helpful. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

- Reading Plans: This is something I will actually use and am glad to see the broad implementation of this across the library.

I can see the value add for those who are preparing Sermon/Homily Builders - Manager and the Counselling Guide looks to be useful as well.

I have only found one bug so far, but a pleasant surprise. The New English Translation Bible (NET) now has an interlinear, or at least this is the first time I noticed it, but the inline is not working for me. Regardless, I am pleased to see this resource tagged as the translator notes that come with the NET are very useful.

There are a few things that I hoped would make it in this version, but that is for another time. It's time to celebrate and congratulate the team for the work they have done to help us study the word better.

I have only found one bug so far, but a pleasant surprise. The New English Translation Bible (NET) now has an interlinear, or at least this is the first time I noticed it, but the inline is not working for me. Regardless, I am pleased to see this resource tagged as the translator notes that come with the NET are very useful.

Hi Donovan.

I believe this should be resolved (viewing NET reverse interlinear inline) but may require closing the resource window and restarting Logos / Verbum. If you're still having issues, please follow up on this thread.

After only 2 minutes, scrolling seems smoother, faster (much appreciated). More impressions to come.

I'm at the end of my first workday using L9Mac (iMac also 3 monitor setup). I love the new dark mode, and it was a nice surprise to open to the new look. However I am quite frustrated with the new FactBook. I am constantly unintentionally triggering it trying to highlight or copy and then have to wait to close it (again) because it spikes my processor for a moment or 2 as it draws from the whole host of resources it ties into. I'm hoping there is some checkbox somewhere that I can use to turn off some of its "easy" accessibility somewhere so I can actually get something done for more than 3 minutes without invoking and then closing FactBook.

Still disappointed that no one has updated notes for Mac with the now long (well over a year) removed keystrokes that were lost with the overhaul to notes. I had hoped that since they weren't fixed in 8 that they would might be restored instead in 9, but no such luck.

Do you mean this is happening in your Bible? If so, you can toggle that feature on and off using the Factbook Visual Filter button in the resource panel toolbar (right next to the regular visual filter button).

@Andrew: Thank you, that was indeed the issue. I appreciate the help.

@Mark, I posted about it back when the issue first arose in Oct 2018 and received word back in March 2019 from one of the folks at Faithlife that it had been added to an existing case request. However there has been neither further communication nor action on this issue since then. In the interim I have had time to preach through the entire book of Hebrews which I started the very same week that I noticed the issue and will finish on this Sunday.

How is the Greek Grammar Ontology prioritized by Logos or do I have to manually reference what I need in it?

The Greek Grammar Ontology is an independent resource. Many of the concepts in the Ontology can be navigated to through Factbook. But mostly, it is a manual reference.
