Bible Search – using Basic Search instead
Span: verse or chapter
As one gets comfortable with the Verbum search, one begins to float between Bible and Basic search depending upon the specific conditions. One reason is that a Bible search looks at a single verse at a time to evaluated the search argument. The Basic search looks at an article/chapter at a time.

- Zillah and Adah are adjacent in the scripture but a verse break comes between them.
- “Zillah BEFORE Adah” in a Bible search has no results because it is looking only within a verse.
- “Zillah BEFORE Adah” in a Basic search has results because it is looking within a chapter.
Text arguments or datatypes?
Why did I use text rather than datatypes for Adah and Zillah? Because “two wives” includes both Adah and Zillah, changing my results dramatically. Use the one that meets your needs – I was concerned with the order of names not the order of reference to persons.

Which fields belong with a Bible search vs. a Basic search?
I am unable to explain all the apparent anomalies but I believe this to be more accurate than my previous description:
- All search fields shown in a resource’s panel information: Search fields should appear in a drop down search field menu for the search types to which the fields apply.
- Only search fields applicable to the search type should show in the drop down menus.
- There are some discrepancies in the implementation
- If a field search yields no results in a Bible search (or cannot be selected in a Bible search), try a Basic search.
It appears that it is only because I own the NJB with readers’ notes the cross-references appears in the Bible search as well as the Basic search for me. By running them parallel, you can see that switching between Bible/Basic searches does not change the results.

Logos 9.2 modification to Bible search
From Logos 9.2 release notes
Search
- Added the ability to search for cross-reference footnotes when searching for a Bible reference in a Bible.
In general, one can define the Bible search as limited to the search field Bible text; because it is the default, it is not an option in the search fields – it is assumed. With this modification, when I run a default Bible search against a reference, I get cross-reference links to the reference. When I run a default Basic search against a reference, I get all notes, cross-references, etc. that contain the reference.
