Logos 9 crashes when launched by MacBookPro with M1 chip

Hey folks!

I've read several forum entries that the 2021 MBP with an M1 chip should have no problem running Logos 9. I've installed Logos 9 (desktop app) on the MBP and experience nothing but crashes. It won't even load for the first time. I'm running BigSur and all other software is up to date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I should have been a little more specific. Technically, I suppose, the app "launches", but approximately 1 second into "Preparing your Library... this may take a while..." the app crashes. Every time.

Additionally, Logos 9 did not prompt me for the installation of Rosetta 2, therefore I'm assuming it is not mandatory to properly run Logos 9.

Incorrect. You will need to install Rosetta first.

Thanks JT. I'll give it a try. The Apple literature seemed to suggest that I would be prompted. Oh well.

I'm about to become a command prompt expert... involuntarily... LOL

I should have added: Rosetta needs to be installed ONCE on your computer. If you were prompted to install it for a different app, you are good.

Did you migrate from a previous installation, or did you download the engine fresh?

Also, which build of the Logos app? You can find this out by right clicking on the app icon in the applications folder.

If there isn't a more simple explanation, it is likely you will need to post logs. See my signature line.

I had not yet added Rosetta, and I had not yet been prompted.

I just installed it, ran Logos and had the same result...

It's a new MBP, so I'm still updating all sorts of things. I'm about to install MacOS 11.2.3.

We'll see if that fixes the problem.

You answered that while I was responding. If the update to macOS AND the installation of Rosetta doesn't work, logs will be needed.

Did you restart your computer? That never hurts.

To answer your original question / statement, there isn't any known issue with Logos and the M1 running on Rosetta which would cause the issue you describe. That doesn't mean that there is not, but having a crash on an M1 is not the same thing (necessarily) as the M1 causing the crash. Hopefully this is an install of rosetta issue and it will be resolved quickly for you.

Darn good question, now that I see the 8.x number!

I downloaded what I thought was the latest build directly from Logos.com without really checking that it was the latest. I'll delete it and check that it's a 9.x build.

Actually, this could be very important, so clarification is needed.

The default method to install Logos is to download the engine, enter your credentials, and allow your resources and data to download from FL. However, you <may> have "migrated" information from an old computer, so that the data from your OLD computer is now on your NEW computer. If that is the case, then it certainly is relevant.

Another trick I forgot to suggest is to try opening to a blank layout. Press and hold the command key immediately upon startup.

I started here (a page that clearly references Logos 9)... and clicked "install". Then it took me here (a page that clearly installs Logos 8).

Success... it was as simple as making sure I was running Logos 9 along with Rosetta.

Not sure why Logos points to Logos 8 when it's referencing Logos 9, but hopefully they'll see this thread and deal with it.

For clarification, and to help others who may stumble across this thread... Had you previously owned (free or otherwise) the L9 engine? If so, how were you able to download the correct engine? We certainly want to make sure to direct people to the right place.

I had previously owned the L9 engine (on another machine). I chose to download it fresh because it was more convenient than migrating. Problem is, the Logos site took me to a L8 install from an L9 information page (as discussed above).

I got the URL from Bernhard, above ( https://www.logos.com/basic).
