Pre-pub Timeline

For personal budgeting purposes, it would be extremely helpful to have a rough estimate of the target release date. I currently have over $1800 in pre-pubs. It would be nice to plan my finances so that I don't get swamped if several are released in the same month.

I'm not necessarily looking for something as specific as a projected release date. If we even had a projected month or quarter, it would help. Thanks!

Agreed. And I can't promise anything from the rest, but for my part, I promise that I won't even complain if projections get changed, aren't met, etc. But some rough date would be nice...like back in the old days

I, too, think it is a good idea. However, that said, Jim (without any condescension meant), maybe you could decide what your "max budget" is, and prorate that out over the year, setting aside your monthly amount, even if it is not used for a pre-pub. Then, even if several hit, you have cash set aside. It may be that more comes due than you can pay for (as happens to me on occasion), which, in that case, you may have to forgo a book or collection.

I still would like an estimate, and agree with Jacob's perspective.

I think what I'm going to start doing is setting aside money in my PayPal account (for which I have a MasterCard for making credit card purchases from the account). That way the money can be set aside without the threat of me spending it, so it'll be there whenever a prepub is ready to be released and I don't have to give a second thought to whether or not I have the money available in my account to cover it.

Agreed. . . . It is perplexing to me that some pre-pubs have been published as quickly as a month or so after reaching "under contract," while others linger for much longer with no projected publication date.

Even a rough estimate is much better than nothing.

Some publishers put a release date on when an e-book can be released, so in some cases the work is done but cannot be released. Publishers often do this to protect print sales. There are other factor that go into the calculus of when a resource gets released after it clears the pre-pub hurdle, I know that at the publisher my wife works for release dates slip all the time and sometimes it's easier to just say it'll be done when it's done.

This has become my pattern as well. The last actual credit card purchase with Logos was the NICOT/NICNT set - I'm still working that one off. [:O]

From now on, my wife and I have agreed that I'll pay "cash" via my paypal card or I'll have to let the great deals just slip on by. sigh.
