There NEEDS to be a way to see and select what is downloading

I understand that Logos wants the L4 engine to be always updated, and the books to be always up to date, but ..... a 636 MB download now - and I have a 250 MB limit per day on the satellite connection. I need to be able to select what is downloaded at the moment. I should be able to select the engine downloads and not the new books (that is my guess at this point) and then do a partial download each day.

I will probably just take the laptop into town tomorrow and have it update, then move it to this computer, but - there should be some choices here, in fact I think there NEEDS to be some choices here.

I know I have seen this kind of thread before. I would like to see Logos become more flexible on this issue.

It isn't an issue for me, but I would still like to make a suggestion. Couldn't links be given for resources to be downloaded manually? Then instruct us as how to have those resources "discovered" by their installation? Maybe even have a simple script to automatically do this for us for each
resource link. Once resources are updated, then you could do a program update as needed. Since the program has different commands for update now and update resources, it seems that there is already some separation in the software. I do understand that many times resources must be updated for the software to work properly. But this would give an option to those who need it.

Bob has indicated that the resources and the software need to be synchronised to avoid creating an unstable version of Logos so from this I understand that they will want to retain control of the download process.

With that said I think it would be nice to set download caps per-day or per-month in the program settings to help those on restricted access.

This may be a good suggestion when we have the final release but during Beta testing maybe we have to "pay this price" to have the opportunity to test resources in new ways and to evaluate new implementations.

That is a realistic appraisal of the situation. Beta testers (and those wanting-to-be) had a warning that these downloads would be coming and some have had problems whilst indexing, but that is part of beta testing.

My suggestion is Automatically Download Updates = NO and I'm still waiting to do the download!

Another strategy is to start downloading and kill the download when your limit is reached. L4 will then index what you have downloaded (according to those that have tried it!). You can do this in conjunction with turning off Automatic Downloads.

The real issue here is that this is a usage scenario that was not identified in the Beta so Logos have not created a solution yet. The focus in the beta was on a monthly cap and the ability to turn downloads on/off accounted for this. The challenge now is to have a mechanism that can stage downloads for a daily cap which I expect will demand some extra design work before it can be implemented.

These methods are of course what I do now. , they are just not what I want to do. And maybe when L4 is out of beta there will be options in this area, I just what to make sure Logos knows that there are many of us who could really use a method to limit the downloads, but would still like to download updates as they come out.

I do have the beta channel set another computer, so I can download it at work, and transfer it later, so I have an option, but I know others don't.

While I agree with this..it sounds reasonable...the issue is the huge cost of tech support.

As one poster alluded to...having multiple systems in different stages and configurations of resource downloads causes an extra layer of tech issues...and one of the main design requirements of L4 is that they try and minimize that "million dollars a year spent on tech support" so as harsh as it sounds...it seems that this issue is going to stay like it is...that's the situation as I understand it.

I have suggested that there be another setting for a download limit (in megabytes) but there was no response from Logos.

The problem is that I do this anyway. Sometimes I go and update the laptop in town, then bring it out and update the home computer, but sometimes I just update about 200 MB, let that update and index, then do the next 200 the next day.... So if it all goes bad after todays 200 MB update, I'll be calling tech support (well, not really, it's the beta, so no tech support, and it's Saturday, so again, no tech support, but you get the idea).

If partial downloads are going to happen anyway, Logos might as well make it happen in a way that is best for L4.

It would be great to be able to see and choose updates as per iphone apps or even system updates.

However we on the Mac Alpha have a preferences pane that will allow us to turn 'use internet' to off.

This stops all updates until we are ready for them and of course the system is frozen at a reasonably stable level.

I know that this doesn't address the problems with download caps but it would allow you to select when the system accepts downloads.

Perhaps, as a stop gap, this could be added to the Windows beta.

It would be too late if Auto Download = YES (and I don't restart L4 unless it crashes or something else wants a restart!). You need a fixed option for the download amount.

I'm talking as a general change to the updater portion of L4.

Just so it would give the user a choice of how much to download, instead of doing it all automatically.

So whether it just a 40 meg program update, or a resource update / install that could be up to several gig, the user could download a portion each day (in keeping with their bandwidth limitations). And then, once all of the data is on the user's computer, the actual installation could take place. As in:

Download the update and/or resource over a period of days (as selected by the user)
When complete, compile the download.
Check for any pending resource updates accompanying a program update. (to prevent any unnecessary indexing)
Install the download, and resources subsequently.
L4 would then perform the indexing, as necessary.
