Synchronization Behavior?

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what should be synchronized. Windows PC#1 has my window layouts and reading plan docked to it. I read some of the days and check it off correctly.

I start Window PC#2 and it appears to be synchronizing only some of the window panes? The Reading Plan is correctly up to date, but my Bible's position and the Commentary I have open isn't updated to the same position as my Windows PC#1.

I see the same issue with my Mac PC#3.

Should the Bible and Commentary positions be matching Windows PC#1? I would think so and the fact that it updates my reading plan that is docked in the screen tells me synchronization is sort of working.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ETA: This is on the Windows and Mac version as of this Saturday/Apr 17 (when I installed it) installed from Logos' servers.

I'm having the same sorts of issues... When I quit the software, and reopen it, it seems to be at some point that's older, rather than where I last left off, at least in the commentaries. What is really supposed to synchronize and what isn't?

User data syncs. This means that documents such as notes, clippings, and reading plans etc. syncs (basically anything you see in the file menu). If you manually save a layout, it syncs. The automatically generated snapshots of layouts do not sync. The data on where a book was when you close it does not sync. This information is kept locally (not synced) so you have the ability to keep studies separate on different machines without messing up resource locations in the middle of something.

Hopefully this explains the way that your syncing is working.

If you want to pick up on machine 2 from where you were on machine 1 you will need to save a layout and let Logos sync before you close it and walk away.

I had perviously saved a layout but I thought that would be just window positions, etc. Doesn't that mean my layout gets synced? Or do I have to save/rename the layout/snapshot everytime? Is there an easy way to do this?

I was under the impression that it would allow me to work on my desktop and then I would be able to pick up where I left off on my laptop, etc. If I have to save each time before I exit it doesn't sound as simple as I'd like.

Name the layout and load it on the other PC, which otherwise retains its layout between restarts. This is my preferred way to work, and avoids issues with different monitor resolutions or dual-monitor vs single monitor. Use bookmarks/favourites to keep track of your reading.

Why do I need to rename and save it? That's what the snapshot does doesn't it? ie, It's the same file as snapshot other than I'm renaming it to say ABC. Even if its "different" and I load it onto the other PC, I'd have the same problem going from Windows PC#2 to Windows PC#1 wouldn't I?

Where do I find bookmarks/favourites? Isn't my reading plan by definition a bookmark as I mark things read in my bible if should get to that point automatically?

The snapshots are like a history list. They keep track of what and how you are studying on a particular machine. I don't want these snapshots to cross polinate between my machines because the types of layouts I use on my 14" laptop are quite different from my 22" desktop monitor. Once you save a layout (click the pencil besides the snapshot and give it a name) then that will begin syncing. Some of my saved layouts work OK on both machines but I find that I have to tweak for the difference in display if I use a layout generated on a different screen size.

Look in the tools menu. For regular, scheduled reading the reading plan is an adequate bookmark system, For ad hoc reading and items of interest use bookmarks and favorites.

I'll try it, but it doesn't sound intuitive to me. That's sort of like saying I'll call the tiger a house cat and the other computer will now know its a house cat . It's still a tiger regardless of the tag you put on it. Same with the layouts to me.

Yes, the relative positions and the locations within the book should be the same when you load layout ABC.

It doesn't work for me. I've tried to tell it to update the position, I've tried to rename it, I've tried to setup a new layout, etc. Neither of them will move my relative positions forward whether it is from Windows PC to another Windows PC or Mac PC in any combination that I can see. I've also tried to tell the other PC to load the layouts, etc.
