The book is Old Light on New Worship: Musical Instruments and the Worship of God, a Theological, Historical and Psychological Study by John Price.

The book sets forth arguments against the use of instrumental music in the worship assembly. Interestingly enough, it was written by John Price, a Baptist Pastor.

I’m not sure if he mentions them, but he definitely quotes a lot of the reformers to present his case (Wycliffe, Calvin, Wesley, etc.). Lots of history! I just got my copy today from Amazon. I wish I had the time to type it up and make a personal book but it’s too much work! I have plenty to do lately there’s no time for hobbies 😁

Discover the Mystery of Faith: How Worship Shapes Believing

I got it in Kindle, but eBooks has it now. Basically, it's a contrasting of contemporary music worship, towards the Orthodox liturgical. A nice read.

You mentioned the church fathers. One thing that impressed me in the history dating, was either the causality of 'church buildings' > instruments, or the coincidence of church buildings > instruments (avoiding those idol-driven flutes, of course). It's not by accident, 2000 years later, most church music is string-based. Yes, there's little flutes hidden inside those organs; be careful.

The best way to get across your interest in it and potentially influence Faithlife to inquire into getting the rights for it is to post it on the Logos Book Requests forum on Feedbear, and then use the forums to ask people to vote for it. The more votes the more likely Faithlife will weigh it seriously as a contender. But they have their own reasons for sometimes ignoring our requests there too. However it's almost guaranteed they will ignore our requests in this forum. This forum used to be the preferred way to make book suggestions, but it no longer is.

Reading Old Light on New Worship is like opening a Puritan time capsule. Puritan arguments are presented in their own words, minimally disturbed by challenges to their approach to history or scripture. The wonderful, unintended serendipity of Old Light, however, is that its light on these Puritan arguments helps explain why today's heirs of their "Reformed" tradition continue in so many divisions.

Just as troubling as the Puritan approach to scripture is their lens on early church history. In Old Light, Puritan mistakes about the early centuries [Justin Martyr (pp. 71, 83, 108) or the influence of the synagogue (pp.64-67)] are repeated, dissolving into their selective readings from the third century onward. Of the Reformers, McKinnon has well summarized, "Men were compelled by their allegiances to construct revised versions of the past; the simple chronicling of events was replaced by history that was selective and interpretive." ( The Temple, the Church Fathers and Early Western Chant (Collected Studies, CS609) , VII: p. 241). Old Light, characterized by some as perhaps the best book ever written on early church music, is better seen as the Puritan skew. Other modern books on early church music lack that slant. An excellent choice from the Reformed tradition is Stapert's A New Song for an Old World: Musical Thought in the Early Church (Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Liturgical Studies) . I highly recommend Page's The Christian West and Its Singers: The First Thousand Years . McKinnon's works are indispensible.
