Study Method

I am curious as to what your method of study is. I love Logos and the power that it gives me in searching my resources, notes, etc. However, I find that when studying in a resource I do lots of highlighting and create notes but I tend not to remember as much as I would like. I am 68 and my memory probably is not as good as it once was. When studying from a print book I type out or handwrite the sentences, key phrases, etc. that I think are important. I am more selective in what I take note of because of the time involved in writing out my notes. When I am done with the resource I analyze my notes and compile a written summary. I tend not to do this with my studies in Logos but am beginning to think that I need to do more extensive study in Logos. In Logos I tend to do my highlighting as I work through a resource then quickly move onto another resource. Here is the deal, what is your study method as you work through a resource? Do you have a system to review your notes? What do you do with your notes once your study is complete? Thank you for your help!

It depends upon what you mean by "study." My answer here is not for students taking exams.

I too highlight when I read. Unless I have a particular reason for reading a book (i.e. starting a sermon series), I <don't> do any more study when I finish the book. However, if I ever come back to the book for some reason, I can skim my highlights to remember things. For me, highlighting does three things:

Helps my understanding at the time of reading.
Related, helps my memory and retention of the matierial in the near future
Long term, it allows me to refresh my memory on the subject and content of the book.

My problem in the past has been that I read a book. I remember that it was a good book about certain concepts, but I can't remember specifically what I really enjoyed about the book. I had highlights but my notes were a mess or at least inconsistent. Maybe I'll skim the book again to refresh my memory (or even re-read it), but that process takes too much time.

I'm now using Readwise to review highlights I've made in books on Kindle. I would love to see Faithlife work with the people at Readwise to create an integration for Logos as well. That would be ideal, or if someone knows a quick, easy way to export Logos highlights into Readwise...

Readwise allows you to review a set number of highlights each day. You can mark some as favorites so that you review them more often. The highlights also export to other notes applications such as Obsidian or Notion or Evernote. Once there, you can use "progressive summarization" to review these highlights. Ditto (a bit older than you). I mainly 'read' relative to an agenda (rabbit-trail usually). And, I highlight, though periodically I delete all the highlights ... I use highlighting as an extra vehicle to the visual cortex (visual memory).

My solution, which I don't recommend, is to add a comment to each book of significance that I wish to remember. An importance numeric value, followed by the key points (for me). I put the comment in the library view where I can see it and remember. How? I use the 'Series' column, which is editable (I already use tagging for classing/finding/searching).

'Series' are an odd duck in the Logos library (quack-quack). Originally, they were actual series ... like a commentary. But now, they're being populated by more organized 'subjects' ... gee, I wonder why ... because 'Subjects' is so messed up? Anyway, my monographs (what I comment on) don't need 'series' (or pseudo-subject), so I put my comments there. The downside, is the library no longer pops up the column text expansion (instead, favoring just one more book-cover/useless-description), so the comment needs to be short.

The not-recommended, of course, is you never know the Logos designer's next unworkable idea for the library.

I highlight as a read, then go back over it to make notes anchored to scripture. That way it's available when reading or teaching scripture.

My form of study is maybe a bit different.... I don't use highlighting at all.

I use Notes. I make a Note about a subject... where I put my thoughts and such about the subject.... then as I read books... I use hyperlinks to the book of what is proof to me on that subject which I back up with Scripture passage.

I also keep what I call "MyIndex" whereby I put the hyperlink of the book also. MyIndex is always open and I seem to add to it every day. But with Notes and MyIndex it I can find stuff quickly and easily... (Logos Search is too complicated so I build my own)...

My study time consists of reading 5 chapters of Bible every day.... reading parts of a book in my library that I am reading through.... re-memorizing Scriptures (I keep a memory list of passages)... I normally spend about 3 hours a day with all that, sometimes more as I like to prove things.... and that takes time to do the research and such. I have been disappointed with Logos Search to really help me with all that (mostly my fault).... but there are other ways to find things... which I do.

But I've found that with Notes and with MyIndex... and time.... I am developing good sources for follow up to remind myself of what I have studied.

After my daily study (above) then I work on lessons, sermons and such.

And that's good till about Noon -1:00 oclock. Afternoon and early evenings.... I try to visit.

That's a normal day for me.

So there's an app I think may help you a bit. It is subscription based, but also has a free version. It's called Readwise. Essentially what it does is collects all your highlights in once place for you to be able to browse through them. If you're willing to pay, it also sends you highlights that fit certain criteria for you to recall. I personally just use it as a highlight repository until all my paper and ebooks get replaced with Logos books. I would say try it out at the very least. I am pretty happy with it (non-paid version, I think the paid version is not so great for the price)

Hi Michael. I'm a similar age, and (like you) I highlight as I go.

For books that really matter, I also create a notebook in Logos (Docs menu), and comment or paste in phrases I'll want to find again. That way the notes are searchable and I never lose them.

Could you see yourself doing something like this?

Thank you everyone for your great ideas. I will add them to my study toolbox. I do not study for exams, those days are long past. I study when I am teaching a lesson or preparing to preach a sermon. Mostly though I study for my own edification. While it is important to me to be able to search my library and my notes when I am looking for something specific, it is even more important to me that I remember much of what I have studied. When I am in a discussion or participating in a workshop I want to be able to recall what I have studied and not have to perform a search in my Logos software.

There is a workflow on Inductive Bible Study although not based specifically on the book you mention. However they do seem to reference it.

For some reason the workflows have never worked for me. I don't know whether it's because they're too structured, or they simply don't fit with the way I think.

This is a fair critique. I believe the workflow editor is only available within some levels of Logos 9. I have used the editor to combine a couple of the standard workflows to fit my preferred study method.

I've gotten zealous about Notes after listening to Morris Proctor. You can do those anywhere and even on a phone. Tag them well and stick groups into Notebooks and you are good. This also fits into the workflow scheme.

When learning to type, two methods are taught 1) accuracy 2) speed.

For reading I get in my Logos Ferrari and speed down the turnpike, reading a few chapters in various versions, taking notes in Logos or in Mac Pages "Study Notes" file.

For study I slow down for the school zone. I downloaded a native speaker for the LXX and the Greek New Covenant, slow down the speed to .5 (via VLC), and follow along in the Logos Greek interlinear (iMac 24" split screen, interlinear left, audio right). "Scholars" say the interlinear is cheating because they want you to go through the labor to learn nouns, verbs, conjugations, and so on. But how did we learn English, or native tongue. We don't remember, but we were immersed in it. Along with language culture and customs are learnt. Greek and Hebrew may not "fit" into our culture! After listening at half speed, I start again at beginning of chapter at full speed. This can also be done reading along in Hebrew interlinear - there are two Logos Hebrew audio Covenant One. Thus, accuracy and then speed. Trying to learn Greek this way at half speed helps me focus on The Word and it's amazing (age 75 next month- it's just a number) The Word is absolutely Alive - quick and powerful!!

I study for admonition, not for ammunition. I study to learn The Whole Counsel of Yah (Acts 20:27) and not for sectarian debate, which is of no profit, nor for quarreling over words Ro13:13,14:1; 2Tim2:14,23.

Because of "wrestling" with the text and trying to keep up while comparing Eng to Grk, I find that because I have to concentrate I remember a lot more than just half-focused in English. So age should not be a problem because the memory of the righteous is BLESSED! Pr10:7.

Because of the question how you study, there's one more thing: This question coincides with an earlier question of studying outside your tradition. If I study only in the echo-chamber of certain denomi-nationally approved doctrines, then "all Scripture" may not be acceptable to my institution. The water level of my understanding must rise above all doctrinal silos in order to see the vast ocean of The Whole Counsel of Yah, when the Mysteries of The Kingdom are revealed little by little. It is given to you to know - not just a few doctrinal trinkets - but the Mysteries of The Kingdom Mt13:11. Blessings! and Shalom!
