Graham --- I got the same response.... but thought it was because I didn't have as many resources or the right kind of resources....  or maybe because I don't like Factbook????  lol

Those endless bars are all I’ve seen, unless I use the icon.

    May indeed be attitude!

The "endless bars" actually indicate an application error similar to a crash, but not one that kills the application. If you go to that Factbook page, then upload your logs files, we may be able to track down and fix the cause of the problem. Reporting this in a separate thread would be a nice, though not required.

The "endless bars" actually indicate an application error similar to a crash,

Thank you for the followup, Andrew.

I'm probably not the best source to check the error. Either my Mac, Verbum, or macOS, the software doesn't know when it's offline, if it previously was online, and I switch the net off.  After that, for the remainder of the day, Verbum can't see the internet, even if it's on.  I view this as an unadvertised feature (touch base once a day).

But that seems to be at least the source of the error for me, and it likely occurs in the Search routine, using the following scenarios:

    A. On-Line 1stTimeNetUse. Search hedonism.  'Factbook' is printed, about a second delay with spinner, and a link is provided. Clicking on the link opens Factbook, and the sections are correctly populated as appropriate (eg No results, or some results).

    B. On-Line then NetTurnedOff: Search as in A. Factbook is printed, and instantly a link is provided (even if hedonism wasn't earlier searched). The link opens Factbook, with none of the sections populating (the error as displayed earlier in the post).

    C. Off-line from the start.  Search as in A; Factbook is printed, and instantly a link is provided. Opening Factbook, sections having no results, display as no results; those requiring an index search (I assume) keep searching with no success.

    D. On-lineFirstUse, or On-lineThenClosed or OfflineFromStart. Open Factbook panel (no search), enter 'Hedonism' and results are correctly displayed as appropriate.

So, the 'error' seems in that instant after Search prints 'Factbook'.  I'm guessing you do a quick server query (from the timing and the involvement of the net on/off). Just guessing a failedNet flag doesn't get set at that point in scenarios B and C?

I'm hoping xnman will see your advice, and try it (with logs).  He'll likely be a better test.  I put the reply here, so he'll see it.

xnman is just seeing "no results", which is expected. I think you are the only one seeing the endless spinning indicators.

Your "B" example is surprising to me. Your "C" example may or may not be surprising. Which sections keep searching with no success?

It's definitely related to going offline. We would be happy to take a look at your log files if you decide to post them.

Factbook's autocomplete (and search) run against the server, but if the query takes a little longer than expected, it falls back to a local autocomplete that is faster but gives slightly different results). This is the difference in your search result timing. Generally speaking though, most of the other sections don't rely on the network at all, and shouldn't be affected by network status, aside from the obvious Bookstore section and Media (if I remember correctly).

Thank you for the explanation.  I think I'll take a pass, since it's probably only me.

Here are some exciting features coming soon in Logos 10!

    I'm hoping for:

Evangelical Buzzword Finder - "Unpack" and identify all of the latest verbiage!  New words added every day.  Collections from past decades and generations available (SUPER!)

Dubious Aphorisms and Quotes Filter - "When love is felt, the Gospel is heard."  Biblical or theological logic/consistency/orthodoxy is optional and certainly NOT required - just add emotion/God words/rhetorical pause for effect ... and you're there!  This filter will help you identify DubAph&Quo's so you, too, can use them in your speaking and teaching.

I-Hope-I-am-the-Next-Big-Thing Neologisms Tool - Also known as Coining-New-Phrases-and-Buzzwords-in-Hopes-That-You-Can-Lead-the-Parade Tool.  Book sales, TV interviews, published articles, seminar speaking invitations, etc. are not guaranteed - but this tool is a first step.

Instead of Artificial Intelligence, I prefer to continue to rely on Divine Intelligence instructing my Natural Dullness (Ps 32:8, John 16:13a)

Excellent choices.  You probably have your 'ear to the ground' (practicing), but with these features, I'm thinking 'not tired old arguments!', 'fresh new perspectives!' and 'refusing the latest trendy thinking'.

Yes, they will do this, but the date is not normally announced with the initial release.

I really hope Logos 10 adds proper support for touch screen PCs. Surface Pro devices and touch screen laptops have been around a while now, and I hoped that Logos 9 would add the feature.

It would make a real difference.

I wonder as a percent of market share how many are using touch screen devices? I know this is one of those chicken and egg issues (if its unuseable on a touch screen, no one will be using it, if no one is using it, no one is developing for it, which results in no new users using it, which limits future development resources being put into it, which.... well you get the idea).

I use my iPad with the mobile versions, and those are pretty good. But I don't have a touch screen laptop/desktop/ms surface. So its not a thing that impacts me much either way.

In general though, when there is money to be made, Bob allocates the resources, so that Logos can sell to those customers.

You used to hear it was the next big thing. Then it seemed to fall off the radar. In my limited experience, it seemed useful. But it wasn't a must have. One person I know who does have it, dislikes it and wishes they could disable it. That's only anecdotal of course. But I wonder how that translates into how many people who have them like it and how many don't.

Not my last laptop, but the one before that had it.

I almost never used it. I partly forgot it was there, and partly was annoyed by it when I remembered it. Usually because someone came along and started touching my display (pet peeve any way), clicking on things messing things up.

I wouldn't avoid a computer that had touch capabilities, but I don't seek it out either.

Ditto. I did use the touch screen and stylus ... painting, writing. The drivers supported Logos use, so I never saw FL doing touchscreens ... which ones?

But it all ended with an iPad. And now my iPad writes to the Mac, so I guess I came full circle, almost.

Yeah, if a computer that had the stats I need had it, I'd consider it a plus. But not having touch would be good enough.

Hi Daniel - and welcome to the forums

I have logos 8. should I get version 9 now or wait for 10 in a few weeks?

As a minimum I would upgrade to the free Logos 9 engine - available at https://www.logos.com/product/194909/logos-9-basic - which would get you onto a supported platform along with the additional functionality prseent in Logos 9. And you don't lose any current functionality or features if you go down this route.

Then, if there are particular resources you would really like in current Logos 9 base packages that is well worth conssidering as package configurations typically change when major releases are shipped

  • Member Posts: 1,658 ✭✭✭

Daniel, I know nothing of which features you've got, how you use it, how much time you have on your hands, or anything like that, but it does seem like moving to 9 has not been a huge motivation for you, so if you're just talking about the actual program, I would wait for 10 if I were in your shoes.

Trust me - given the amount of stuff that needs to be moved around to update the packages, the storefront, the code for all the apps ... you want them to have the weekend, not try to do it while users are trying to meet deadlines . . .
