Dear Logos....

Dear Logos,

We have seen great strides in notes, highlighting, etc. Most of this is great for those who use Logos as permanent reading, study and devotional use.

However can those of use who use Logos for not only study but for functionality and power tools, not as a steroid amped Kindle; get some love?

We have been waiting on true function tools for a long time with no hint of them coming in beta at all. Where are things that allow us to take our studies and Logos power outside the program? Printing, Sermon File, yes I will mention Smart Tags again, despite reports, I was able to use them in the Office 2010 beta with little difference.

These tools allow for us to export to other files with timesaving ease and to export our notes, highlighting and study to paper that we can bring to the workplace when many have no ability to drag along laptops to do so. Cut and paste works but truly limits Logos. Not having the ability to import sermons is a hindrance as well.

As for the call for greater stability, this is the beta software, if you want stable use the gold version, but building based on stability first and then adding more and more features can actually add work for these guys. Let's get some functionality going again so many of us that use Logos not as a reader but as a tool can once again get maximization from L4 and not have to consider going back to L3 or waste resource space to run both....

Will anyone from Team Logos give a hint as to when we can see some printing, sermon file and other productivity functionality available for the non-reader users?

The missing features gives you an estimated roll-out time for the additional features. Your most important missing features are not my most important features and others would have other opinions. It would be foolish of Logos to give us anything more than the sequence in which they currently intend to address the remaining functions. Sorry if I sound frustrated; it is because I am. I feel just like I do on a car trip with the kids in back asking "are we there yet/" Until the end of June, the "promised" delivery date can't we show some patience and do our best to slow them down by finding as many bugs and instabilities as possible?

Yeah I understand the whole missing features list... Most of what I am looking for is supposed to be 2nd qtr 2010... I guess my frustrations come from the whole feature vote we did and printing capabilities were far and above anything else and we have heard nothing...

Also it seems that the features worked on have been features that cater to those who use their computers as glorifed Kindles with Logos... I'm just looking for some function that allows me to get some use of the power of Logos actually outside of Logos without having to copy and paste all the time, for a program that is supposed to have made us more productive than L3, it has been more time consuming to use the materials it finds faster....

How long has it been since you've visited UserVoice? Also, the work on the enhanced reading view must be completed first so that text can be laid out on the printed page correctly. See: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/16007/121806.aspx#121806 . While more detailed status updates would be interesting, I'm satisfied that they will bring this oft-requested feature as soon as possible.

I would argue that Passage list (formerly Verse Lists) are the single biggest expansion of Logos' ability to evaluate and compare Bible searches since the Analysis view. It is a powerful tool if wielded properly. It's far more than just a simple reading feature for a Kindle [:)].

I sympathize that, depending on your workflow, Logos 4 may not be as fast as Libronix. We're all rooting for Logos to improve upon version 4 even more than they have since its release.

Thanks for your response. Your tone of frustration here I can relate to. Printing I don't care about - but the ability to create and share resources I care about very intensely. Unfortunately, I expect to have to wait beyond the end of the second quarter.[:(] What makes it worse is I know that Logos is working through the functions in a logical manner.

As Kevin noted, the printing feature is marked as "Started" at UserVoice. Those statuses are accurate: work has already begun on pagination support for Logos resources and an exporting/printing framework for reports. Other items are "Planned": we do intend to do them (but no significant work has begun); they may or may not have a target release version set internally.

We're working hard on many of the features that have been suggested (and some "secret" ones we've dreamt up in-house); in general, we'll let you know that a feature is close to completion by shipping it in a beta version (rather than by announcing dates on the forum).

Regarding printing specifically, some technical details (which may sound like excuses, but which I present just for the interest of those who want to know a little bit more about what goes on behind the scenes) are as follows: Apart from resources (which have tables, interlinears, images, multiple scripts, embedded right-to-left text, etc.), we have three types of guides, seven (or more) types of documents, three Bible fact browsers, four major search modes (each with different results views), etc., all of which will need customised code to support great printing. And then there's the UI to select what to print, and how to print it. This feature will take a lot of time to implement, and perhaps will be delivered over multiple releases. (For example—and I'm completely making this up here—maybe 4.0d will print resources and guides, 4.0e will add printing for search results and notes, and 4.0f will add printing of the remaining documents.)

Meanwhile, other new features won't be getting quite as much attention because a lot of energy will be focused on this one area (particularly if we don't want it to take three or four minor versions until it's finished). As a result, Sermon File and PBB are simply marked as "Planned" on UserVoice, not "Started". (And each of those features has now become more complex to develop, because they now need to support printing!)

We want to ship complete, polished, bug-free features; as a result, it may take a little while for a "simple" Print... panel menu command to show up in the software.

As for my Kindle readers comments, my point may not have been as clear as I would have liked. I see a lot of enhancement being done and some very powerful things as were mentioned by Kevin. My point was that while all these are added, they are not as powerful and productive for users like me that use Logos for research and use MS Word or other programs for our Sermon Notes, study notes, etc and need to be able to print notes, highlights, pages from resources for further study and/or work away from the computer... All the features are most beneficial for those that have constant access and work only from Logos and the computer...

Speak for yourself. I'm still waiting with great impatience for Logos to deliver the feature that will allow me to click a button and have Logos deliver a brand new, custom, complete set of sermon notes - outline, illustration, manuscript - based on any given passage. I don't mean pull one from the web, I mean I want the software to do the whole thing brand new. And I am not waiting very patiently.
