Clicking on a scripture reference opens a second window of a resource.

Hi all... here is my problem: Often, when I am reading any resource, with my preferred Bible already open (NIV1984, as it happens), if I click on a scripture reference, Logos opens a *second* window of my Bible resource. So now I have two NIV1984 windows open.

If I *close* that newly opened window and click on the reference again, the same thing usually happens. Maybe two or three (or more) times, same thing happens. But eventually, clicking on the Bible reference does what I wanted it to—it goes to the reference in my *already open* Bible.

Restarting the app or the Mac doesn't solve the problem, nor does shutting down.

This is annoying. Been having this happen for years, through every (Mac) OS, and on several different machines. Any clues would be appreciated so much.

I forgot to mention that the same thing happens with *any* resource. In other words, if I'm reading a given monograph, and click on a selection in the Contents page, it will usually open a *second* copy of the same book... so that now I've got two copies of the book open. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I'd love to get Logos to stop doing this.

This sounds very strange and, I expect, frustrating.

I don't see this on my MacBook and have never seen this behaviour in Logos as far as I can remember.

And I can't think of any explanation so can't suggest anything to fix it!

Neither can I...

My suggestion would be to enable logging, restart logos, replicate the issue, grab the logs and post them here. A techie will need to evaluate them. If you know how to create video captures that might be interesting too.

I have seen similar behavior, even when I have a panel opened with my preferred Bible and the panel set to "Send Hyperlinks Here," Logos sometimes opens a new panel with the same Bible. You are correct that this is frustrating—and quite irritating. I have not reported this behavior as it is quite random.

I've seen the duplicate Bible open when I accidentally jiggle my finger on the trackpad (i've got a mild nervous twitch) at the exact moment I click on the link. Then the duplicate Bible opens either in the same pane as I'm reading or splits the pane in two with the new Bible on one-half.

I reported the same problem on a PC a couple of weeks ago. Philana pointed out that this happens when your mouse is in motion still - i.e. is not interpreted as a simple click but as a "drag-and-drop". My first reaction was "I don't do that" ... but after a couple of weeks of observation "I do do that" and am successfully training myself to clearly click ... Of course, I recover my dignity by blaming it on the infirmities of age [;)]

I think you have to click on the upper-right hand corner 3-dot menu on your NIV 1984 window, select "Send hyperlinks here", then the clicks on biblical references will go to that window.

Hmm... someone else (earlier in this thread) mentioned the "send hyperlinks here" bit. First time I've noticed that, and I've been using other parts of that pane for a dozen years. I will try this (though it seems odd that the app would assume a user wouldn't want that set by default). Many thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.

I've had this problem for a long time too. Just recently I discovered it is as others have noted--if you move the mouse even a bit while clicking it counts as a drag and drop and opens a new window. I really don't think there is anything more to it than that.

If so, that's a little unfortunate, because my mouse settings work fine for everything else... no "unintended windows" etc. in any other app, that I can think of. (But I'll play around with this as has been suggested.) I appreciate all the responses to this!

I don't have any issues in other apps either (with my trackpad), it's just that Logos seems to me to be a little oversensitive to a slight jiggle when I click.

Curious—is the new Bible pane opening as a new tab in the same pane as the resource that you are clicking the link on? Or does it split the same pane? Or does it open as a new tab in an entirely new pane?

If it's the last, then I suspect that it is not a problem with jiggling the mouse/trackpad.

Great question. Answer: It has done all three variously, in fact I wasn't entirely sure, so I did some testing and was able to verify that within a few minutes. As far as the possibility some have mentioned, e.g., that I might be inadvertently causing a new window to open by drag-clicking on the hyperlink... I really (again) don't think this is the case. I'm not saying I'm incapable of the occasional unsteady click; however I have done tests with multiple back-to-back clicks wherein three (or however many) clicks don't open the new window and the next one--identical in weight, speed, etc.--does. And although I can easily create the issue by dragging mid-click, I was surprised to note that this is not 100% reliable, and that doesn't make sense. I'm at a loss.

I don't have this problem having long given up the mouse for a trackpad. You might try a trackpad and see if it performs better for you?

Interesting thought. Unfortunately I use a big external monitor, which in turn, due to my situation, requires closing my laptop lid, making my trackpad unavailable.

This has been happening to me for years too and is very aggravating. I wish there were a way to turn down the sensitivity in Logos for drag & drop links because I end up constantly fixing my layout after a click splits a pane and then when I close it everything else resizes wrong. I use an Apple Magic Mouse so this may be related to the trackpad input.

Yes... I didn't mention it before (I don't think), but perhaps the most annoying aspect of this issue is that when you close the newly opened (unnecessary) window, the current layout is messed up, which means you have to take a few extra seconds to fix it. And in doing so, you might not get window widths exactly as they were before; but if you work around this by refreshing the layout from the layout menu, you'll lose any changes you intentionally made to the layout (but hadn't saved).

I do a few things to avoid this issue:

1. I select the bible I want references to go to and select "send hyperlinks here". Click on the three dots on the upper right to find it.

2. Logos wants to open your top prioritized bible, so if you do not have one open, it will open one. Try moving the bible you are using to the top in priority.

3. I have two bibles open in the same pane, but two tabs... one for my study and the second for reference links. I never lose my place in my study or have to use the back button.

These seem to work for me. Try then as a work around.

I did try the "Send Hyperlinks Here" bit back when someone suggested it earlier; for some reason the feature did not work very reliably in my case. I don't know why. I guess I could try again.

I do ALWAYS, in every layout, have my top-prioritized Bible open. Also, I do keep two of them open in many of my layouts (so that when one auto-follows a resource, the other stays where I had it).

Though I've been using, and enjoying, Logos since 2008, I am not as adept as many of you folk are, so I do appreciate the patient and thoughtful responses.

Just adding another voice to this issue. I typically like to verify any references I've added to a note. Recently I've been adding many references and clicking to verify them, and it is quite frequent that another Bible window opens up. I figured it was probably due to something like a slight mouse movement, but it is overly sensitive. I guess the alternative would be, if it was less sensitive, it might be more aggravating for those who wanted the new window to open. But in my case, I normally want the reference to appear in my main Bible window rather than opening up a new one. It would be nice if there was a sensitivity adjustment for this because it doesn't take much movement in tandem with the click to interrupt the flow with the new window opening up. Not sure if that functionality is even available in the underlying DE.

What is your OS and version of Logos? If Logos 10 please report in the Logos 10 Desktop forum and provide examples of the references you are using.
