BUG: Book vs. Resource Confusion

I am confused also about "resource" or "book"....

I would assume things in my Library to books.... and things associated with Logos Program functions to be resources....

I'm assuming the first column used to be labeled 'Resource'. Perhaps Faithlife has overdone it trying to rename everything that was 'Resource' to 'Book'.

Logos 9:

Yes, the renaming has been overdone.

The menu for Columns has:

Book ---> was Resource

Book

Hope they go back to Resource...Book is mostly synonym with monograph type of publication....maps, concordances, lexicons and similar are usually not referred as books since you don't tend to read them from A to Z.

Interesting variation from where I live where some people extend book to include all bound material including magazines.

yes, I was mostly thinking in the context of digital software such as logos. To me, all books are resources, but not all resources are books. that's why I would keep the old distinction.

You know me -- I'll always err on the side of precision. If I were the ruler of all things Biblical software, there would be a firm product division: products for those with a high-school education or above and products for those who merely attended school for 12 years or less. Those who knew me well would know the distinction was made with an ironic smile as my immediate family includes some highly successful people (with college degrees) who never quite mastered high school. I do not confuse diplomas with education.

It was my maternal grandfather - the ultimate of an ivory-tower professor without common sense who taught my cattleman father the theoretical use inline breeding to fix traits in a cattle herd ... and landed my father a place in the history of cattle breeding and the presidency of an international performance organization. If I had to guess, I would guess that these Resource[s]->Book[s] changes were made in a manner that was at least semi-automated. Definitely a BUG here...

The problem is if you label here as resource but label it elsewhere as book you have created a new problem. They should habe left everything labelled as it was in Logos 9. This woke renaming in Logos 10 is silliness. I told someone to run a basic search recently but then realised due to this wokeness I should have told them to run a book search. [:(]

So you are going to create labelling inconsistency in the program. Renaming everything from resource to book in Logos 10 was a bad idea and FL ignored user concerns about this change not being helpful and when it was floated, but still went ahead with it anyway. And now you have to back pedal to start changing things back.

Woke-iness is definitely uncomfortable. I remember when Bible software had 'modules'. That was so woke. Or still is, I guess. You can always tell who uses what by their woke-iness terminology. Logosians are resource-ful.

Not at all. ONE instance is reverting back to "Resource" because there is an (obvious) ambiguity with the use of Book.

You mean the command? It is definitely "Update resources" right now in Beta. As it should be--I have resources in my Library that are not books.

This is not the criteria we are using. We are calling anything that is visible in your library a 'book". The "update resources" command should be "resources" because it applies to a mix of things that do and don't show up in your library (for example, datasets).

But there are things that are visible in our library that aren't books: Media Collections, for example; also Courseware Media Collections, Interactives, Journals, Magazines, and Timelines.

Unfortunately, I would like to see the datasets in the library as it would be much easier to walk people asking questions through how to tell if they own the required dataset. The Logos library like my local public library is long past the point where library means a collection of books. Even my college library had records and a music room in which to listen to them.

Or, opening a dataset from the Library would open the most "popular"/'Best starting tool" etc that uses that dataset. Books are opened to read, Videos are opened in a media player, maps are opened in a map display engine, datasets are opened by the tool that uses them. Pick the most representative tool to open that dataset. Good way for people to learn more how Logos works, and maybe discover some other tools.
