Logos 4 Mac - Indexing makes my computer run hot.

I'm pretty new to Logos and I hate to bother anybody with a simple problem but;
Whenever Logos is indexing it makes my computer (MacBook Pro) run so hot that I get nervous and stop the indexing,
It doesn't do this when I'm using it under normal circumstances, only when indexing.
Is there something I can do or is this just normal?

It's pretty normal Ty.

If it's designed well, the laptop/macbook will dissipate the heat on it's own. if you're wondering about it, just point a fan at it.

This is actually such a frequently asked question that I should probably put something in the frequently asked questions about it.

Indexing is rather CPU intensive. When the CPU is working hard, it gets hot. When the CPU gets hot, the fan kicks in to regulate the temperature. This behavior is expected and normal.

NOTE: Don't worry too much about the people that will show up later on in this thread suggesting that indexing should take about 10 minutes and use about 1% of the CPU. If we just ignore them, they'll go back to working on their perpetual motion machines.

I have one of those laptop fan base things that you sit your computer on but dang.

Yeah I've been watching it in the Activity Monitor and it's pretty hard on the CPU.

Probably pretty normal, Ty. Indexing likely involves a lot of reading from the hard drive, writing to the hard drive, and CPU processing, all generating heat. Although I'm a PC person, not a Mac person, I would assume that your Mac should be able to handle this OK, even if it gets warm in the process. Just make sure that normal means of cooling, such as ventilation holes and/or screens, are not blocked at all, especially when this is going on.

The computer should be equipped to cool itself to prevent damage. If it's not, that's an engineering flaw in the computer's design. Apple usually does a pretty good job of it. I certainly wouldn't recommend leaving your computer sitting on the bed or on the couch while indexing, as the engineers typically assume it will be sitting on a hard surface. Also, don't do anything to impede the airflow from the fan vents (if any).

While the heat is within acceptable specs, it bugs me so I simply put a house fan next to my laptop and let it index.

I've considered a coating of PAM on the bottom and bacon and eggs for lunch while indexing, however, cooking on aluminum is not good for ones health.

Why does Logos make my computer run much hotter than any other application I own. (And I have many, many applications.)

Bottom line... heat is a killer of electronics and my macbook pro with 4gig of memory gets so hot on the bottom I can't hold on to it.

So far my Logos has indexed TWICE today and contrary to some it takes a lot longer than 15-20 minutes...

I'm also really irritated with the fact that "soon" has translated into 19 Alpha's and many months. With no clue as to how much longer.

Logos owes it to their customers to give a projected time line. If it's going to be 6 more months for an official release then I would delete L4Mac and spend the

money for a licensed copy of Parallels and Windows ($125 ?). But would hate to do that and then a week later Logos releases it's official L4MAC.

Logos if your listening... You owe it to your customers to communicate with us. Excluding any additional expectations that would be on a Christian software

company, I think just common business practice would demand an answer. So even if you don't know when it will be finished (which is understandable),

you should have a pretty good idea as to when it will not be finished. Are you half way through the journey? Then give a time and distance covered and

a projected time and distance yet to go.

The reason is that Logos makes greater use of your hardware than the rest of your applications. Indexing is a very resource-intensive operation, and the only way to make your computer run at a lower temperature would be to greatly extend the time that your computer spends indexing. This process should take less time in the finished product, but it will still make your computer hot because Apple's laptops don't have a very good design for heat dissipation. As Cameron implied, this issue has already been discussed at length several times on the forums.

With no clue as to how much longer.

The FAQ links to multiple posts by Bob Pritchett (our CEO) as to how long the it might take to complete the Mac product. For example, on November 30, he stated that he believed that in six months, the Mac product would be relatively indistinguishable from the Windows product.

He also indicated that it is notoriously difficult to estimate how long a particular software development project will take.

Sometimes it seems like a feature will take months, and it's done after a couple days. Other features seem like they should only take a half-hour or so, but weeks later, they're still unfinished.

Estimation is made more difficult by the fact that new features (for example, Prayer Lists) are frequently added to the Windows version, so "complete" is a moving target for us.

I can say with relative certainty that we won't have a finished product in two weeks, or even four. Beyond that, my power to estimate drops off considerably.
