Hebrew Lemma Searches

I have Logos 9, the settings says Logos Bible Software 24.0.14, no feature set and a basic academic library. My laptop is a Dell XPS 9360.

I'm new to Logos and trying to figure out how to search the Hebrew text. I'm having difficulties understanding the difference between searching חיה and lemma.h:חיה. I would have thought they would lead to the same results but the former causes Logos to search up חַיָּה (the noun) while the latter causes Logos to search up חָיָה (the verb) - see screenshot below.

If I change from LEB to LHB, it suddenly says no results if I do not use lemma.h: but if I do then the results are again different.

I also get different results when I search for the root of חיה and then do רוּחַ with lemma.h: vs just the Hebrew word in both LHB or LEB.

Can someone explain what is going on here?

Also, is there a different between doing these exact same searches under Bible or Morph? I know Morph is used for searching Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic morphology in morphologically-tagged texts, but I am solely looking at lemmas and roots which works in the Bible search, so I am not sure what the difference would be in my case.

This is a request for a specific form of the word think of asking for "gone" which will give you only those 4 letters in that order.

and lemma.h:חיה

This is like looking up "go" in the dictionary which includes go, goes, going, gone; likewise the search will give you all 4 forms of the word.

Root will give you words that are etymologically related as the root flame would include flammable, inflammable

That is helpful. So to clarify, my first search only turned up search results with the noun form of חיה since there are none with the verb spelled exactly like that? Is there a reason why searching lemma.h:חיה then only looks for the conjugations of the verb, rather than also including the noun form? Both searches didn't specify the vowel pointings so I'm not sure why searching for the lemma causes Logos to search for only the verb חָיָה and not the noun חַיָּה. And is there a reason why searching חיה AND רוּחַ gives search results for the LEB but not the LHB?

There is no common reason to ever search on anything but lemma which is defined as the dictionary/lexicon form of the word. If you want to pick up declinational or conjugational form you MUST use lemma. Root tends to be advanced usage only. As to why a given dictionary did or did not provide the expected result you have to look in the dictionary itself. Dictionaries do not always use the same form as the headword/dictionary entry form.

A specific form of the word is usually assigned as the lemma and lemma searches only look for that exact lemma.

If you search for a manuscript word חיה it will ignore marks and give you a result like חַיָּ֑ה. So searching for חַיָּ֑ה will give the same result (in a Hebrew bible).

Hebrew segments are split into component words in a reverse interlinear for translations like LEB, so you will get different results for חיה whilst you will get similar results for the lemma e.g. Gen 50.20 has two results in LEB because two English words are translated/associated with one Hebrew word.

Initial post has screen shots showing AND searches for verse(s) that have both terms.

FWIW: my eyes prefer dark mode, especially at night. For forum screen shots, my preference is light mode (since dark mode screen shots are difficult for some to read).

Bible Search in LHB for lemma.h:חיה OR חיה looks for lemma.h:חיה OR specific Hebrew letter spelling (in a verse) that has different search result highlighting:

Clicking חַיָּ֔ה in Genesis 1:30 search result opens Lexham Hebrew Bible (LHB) to that verse. Mouse hover on חַיָּ֔ה shows adjective has a different lemma. In the right click context menu, can click root on the Left Hand Side followed by clicking Bible on the Right Hand Side to open search root.h:חיה
