Multiple Book Display (MBD)

I really like the flare and blaze that DMB has for Logos. Thank you. But I am reading these posts on Multiple Book Display (MBD) and cannot seem to grasp how this display works? I would also like to differentiate from the parallel book sets. I do not have Logos 10 so I am not sure if this applies to me. I tried using the help link on Multiple Books View but I get error below. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Multiple Books Display (MDP)

In simple terms, you have a Bible open in a panel. You click on the MDP icon arrow. It allows you to select any resource, or collection or tagged-group, to match your location in your Bible. Maybe you want to have it show a commentary. Or another Bible. Anything that has the same reference. And the benefit is 'leader/follower'. The Bible leads; the displayed commentaries (example) can only follow. Clicking on the MDP icon turns it on. Or off. Try it.

Now, actually the leader can be any resource that has milestones of interest. Not just Bible references. And Logos will remember your MDP choices, whenever you open the leader resource.

Parallel Book Sets

Is an older approach. Again, using the Bible example, you simply click on the Parallel icon, and it lists out matching resources: Bibles, commentaries and so forth. You can use the arrow key to move between matching resources. In the panel each 'new' resource replaces the previously viewed resource.

Now, since there's so many matching resources, you can specify which are to be used (not just everything). There's a process for that.

Which is Better?

Really it depends on you. Essentially it works out to viewing one-at-a-time (Parallel). Or several-at-a-time (MDP). Try each ... see which you like. Or both

Both??

Logos is quite flexible. In a single panel, you can set up a resource (eg Bible) for MDP comparison. And in the leader pane (eg Bible) 'arrow' to a Parallel resource! If you arrow back, your MDP will re-display! So, Logos supports both in a single panel.

Now, most people will want one or the other (or neither). Who would want both?? As it turns out, you can 'arrow' between multiple MDPs! Maybe you want to MDP a set of commentaries, MDP a set of greek manuscripts, and MDP a set of hebrew manuscripts. You just associate MDPs with 3 Bibles. Then 'arrow' from one Bible (as an example) to the other. Very efficient!

When they first intro'd MDP, it was free (came with engine). I guess now you need Starter.

How can I access Multiple Books Display (MDP) with Logos 9? Or is it not free now? How can I mimic this display with using Logos 9 and not having to pay extra?

Unless you have a really old computer, you should not be using "Logos 9" (the software).

"Logos 10" (the software) should not be used either. The current version is L29.

If you do not see the MBD icon on your books (per Martha's screenshot above) then you need the Starter Feature Upgrade

These recent posts have prompted me to look again at Multi Book Display and it looks more promising now I've read your descriptions of how to use it.

But there are still a couple of snags for me:

a) When linking Bibles to commentaries, I can't see a way to find the page number in the commentary, making citations difficult (I end up having to open the commentary in a separate tab, then navigate to the same place as in the MBD to get the page number);

b) It's difficult to know which commentary is which as the titles are all something like "John", "Gospel of John", etc. I guess I could over-write the metadata for the comentaries' titles, to say something like "SERIES, AUTHOR", but that's a lot of work.

Is there an easy solution to these?

No easy solution. I don't know any way to get to page# from an MBD panel.

And as you suggested, re-titling solves the column heading problem. Yes, it's bit of a pain, though (for me) I'd do it anyway to sort the commentaries as Bible books.

If you copy some text from the commentary and paste it, doesn't the citation come along (if you have Copy Citations turned on)? Depending on what citation style you're using, the page number should be included with the citation wherever you paste, if the source commentary had page numbers. That works with Chicago Manual of Style citation style, for example:

Their “acts of righteousness” (6:1) brings congruency between the initial gift of positional righteousness by which they gained entrance to the kingdom of heaven (5:20)

Try turning on the "Show page numbers" visual filter. This will display the page number in the text itself.

Well, I saw Rosie's idea this morning and thought that would work, even though I normally have "copy citations" set off. But Andrew's idea suits me even better as I can leave the "copy citations" off and see the page number inline in the text.

This solves the problem of page numbers, but I think that some improvements to headings and tabs could be made to make this feature even better. So, I've added a couple of suggestions to the feedback site. Please vote for them: Improve headings for multi book display and Improve tabs for multi book display.

It's intentional, but messy. There is a Page milestone at that location as well as a Volume/Page milestone, and the visual filter shows both with a space between them.

Looks like you are correct. The entire series is not supposed to have both Page and Volume/Page milestones. I've created a case to clean up the series to fix this problem.
