Best laptop features for Logos 4?

Hello all,

My Dell Studio 15 is in a slow downward spiral of destruction that will ultimately culminate in its inability to do anything. Dell laptops seem to have this tendency; my experience seems to suggest that two years is the average lifespan for Dell compys.

The situation is: I'm off to seminary shortly, where I plan on using Logos extensively. In fact, my main use for any future laptop will undoubtedly involve Logos 4. We're trying to go in with all the money set aside in order to graduate debt free right off the bat. So, two needs: conserve money and get a new computer. I once thought those two were mutually exclusive, but was surprised to see many viable options for sub-$1000 notebooks with great performance. I have two I'm looking at, each with their plusses at they relate to Logos 4 performance.

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 14 - 7200 rpm hard drive.

ASUS U30jc - Nvidia switchable graphics. Faster i3 Core CPU.

Which of these two compys is more likely to get better Logos 4 performance? Are there any other laptops that you can suggest (yes, Dell laptops too).

I've just recently obtained a Dell XPS16 with an i5 processor and a 1GB vid card and a 7200RPM drive.

At this point, I think these are the basic specs for good performance with L4. There is some variation out there, but I'm happy with how my XPS is performing.

I have a 3GB Thinkpad with a Core Duo CPU (@ 2.53GHz) with a 256 MB ATI Radeon HD3400 video card. This is what is called "last year's model" :-)

I have no problems running Logos 4. Anything at that level or above should be fine.

I'm running Logos 4 on a Dell Inspiron 1545 - seems to perform as well as on the desktop - I'm very happy.

There is currently a bug in the version of Microsoft's .NET/WPF that Logos is built with which makes scrolling with any Synaptics touchpad not work. It should be fixed in some future release (not known when), and for now you can always scroll with PageUp/PageDown or clicking on the scroll bar, or get an external mouse. But if this is the kind of thing that would annoy you to no end, make sure you get a laptop which has a different brand of touchpad, not Synaptics.

A laptop like I described would probably run around $1000 US or less. The problem is finding what you want. New cheap laptops generally have poor video cards, whereas laptops with quality 3D-accelerated video cards generally have the latest processors and other stuff, which makes them more expensive.

i just purchased the Inspiron 17" widescreen with the i3 processor. I have not had any problems with logos and it works just as fast as the desktop (which is a new HP touchsmart).

Daniel, I am using an HPG71 340 US Laptop. Core 2 Duo 2.2. 4GB or Ram, 64 bit processor, Intel Mobile 3300 graphics card. Windows 7 Home. All for around 570.00. Logos runs fine on it. If I had the opportunity to change one thing, it would be the harddrive. 5400m RPM seems slow to me, when loading this layout. But as the software becomes faster, the layouts load faster.

Con: My patience takes longer to develop. Lesson: The faster the software and the computer, the less patience I develop. So if I seem a little impatient on the forum at times, blame it on Logos. They keep speeding things up. [:D]

That's great. I'm definitely leaning towards the Lenovo laptop with the 7,200 RPM HD. Saw another deal with 1GB of dedicated graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 7,200 RPM HD. Probably a bit overkill, but for about $1000, it's not bad.

Daniel, I'm using a 2-yr old Dell that I'm still very happy with.

Gets absolutely hammered--typically 10 hours a day--so much so that the keys have lost their paint. Has GPU. Have upgraded the o/s to Win 7. Logos 4 is always loaded. I do wish I had a 7200 rpm drive to see if that helps a little with Bible searches.
