How can I see Strong’s numbers in a Bible version in offline mode for iOS mobile (no exegetical avai

Blue Letter and Olive Tree have settings to see the Strong number next to a word in the Bible text (like NASB95). I can’t see how to do that in offline mode on my iPad. My church does not have internet for guests (rules out the web version, too). My hotspot does not work there either. I have over 3400 books so I am well-equipped with dictionaries, lexicons, and interlinear Bibles. I just nee to see the Strong number. Seems like a simple request.

I can’t see how to do that in offline mode on my iPad.

I don't believe this works offline

You do get it in a popup when you longpress a word - but it does require an Internet connection.

The next logical question is - “why doesn’t it work offline?”. I’m currently working on moving from Olive Tree to Logos and this offline limitation is the last barrier standing in my way. Logically if Olive Tree can do it then it follows that Logos should have the same, or similar, capability. I would think that if we have the proper resources installed then offline mode wouldn’t need to be as limited as it currently is. If this limitation were removed I, for one, would buy more resources to be able to study in Logos when an internet connection isn’t available. I would think that Faithlife would see this as a potential boost in sales.

The issue is that the Logos mobile app is designed to get a lot of functionality from Logos servers over the Internet which, therefore, require the app to be online.

To change this would be a major redesign and I haven’t seen any indication this is planned.

Forgive me Graham, I probably misunderstood, .... but are you saying that Logos mobile does not access the books we have bought in offline mode and only accesses them through internet?

For example.... I bought Strongs have had it for years.... and now you seem to be saying that in "offline" mode, Logos mobile does not access it to show Strongs numbers?

No, if you have downloaded books then they are fully available to read when offline

The issue I was alluding to above is that when online, you can long press a word in a Bible and the resultant popup will show a number of things including the associated Strongs number. But this functionality makes use of Logos servers - with the mobile app making a request of those servers and then displaying the results to the user.

So, without an Internet connection, this is not possible and so the popup is not able to display the Strongs number associated with the word.

Does that help clarfiy things?

Just hold on to your OliveTree. The Logos app is sort of like a quack looking for a duck. Not at all clear what the devs think it's for (eg reading, light study, preaching, or demonstrating neato designs).

So we are able to arrive at the same result, assuming we have purchased and installed the required resources, we just cannot do as easily as a long-press on a word. We would need to manually open the relevant resource and search manually, when offline, since we still have the required resources installed. I used to write software and it makes sense that a search through thousands of resources is faster on a server rather than a mobile phone. Something like this requires a lot more system resources than most people realize. I was wondering why Olive Tree takes up 1.3 gigabytes on my phone while Logos takes up less than half that.

I'm not sure - and haven't tested this.

Because the Strongs number tagging is not directly visible in a Bible, it may not be possible to search for it when offline. If that is the case, we wouldn't be able to determine the Strongs number so wouldn't know what to lookup in an offline lexicon.

Your reply actually makes a lot of sense, we would need to have the relevant lexicon installed and then look it up manually when offline. It’s doable but takes a little more time. Thank you for the information.. I now feel comfortable deleting Olive Tree altogether.
