The Lutheran Study Bible

So today Concordia Publishing House released a Logos version of The Lutheran Study Bible, and you can order the CD-ROM directly from them:

From what I can tell, the CD-ROM has the Libronix (3.0) version of the resource. When I searched for The Lutheran Study Bible on logos.com, it does not come up. So, does anyone know if we will soon be able to download this resource directly from Logos anytime soon, and whether or not there is also a 4.0 resource? If not, perhaps I need to ask CPH about this...? I know the 3.0 can still be read by Logos 4, but should I wait for a downloadable resource that would work more efficiently in Logos 4? Thanks.

Don't worry about it, the resources built for L3 do not suffer from any problems in L4. The updated versions are just a bit "tighter" if I understand correctly.

As for the rest of your query, I would imagine that Concordia is your first line of contact.

I received the LSB CD-ROM today, loaded it into Libronix, synched licenses, but it still hasn't shown up in L4 yet. So I keep opening and closing L4, hoping it will magically appear. If not, I guess a call to customer service will be in order.

Had to call customer service to get this activated in L4. Hunter was extremely helpful and had me up and going in about ten minutes. Thanks, Hunter!

P.S. Wait time to be connected to customer service was nil. All told, another great Logos experience!

I called CPH this mornng to order the Lutheran Study Bible on CD. Apparently there is what the customer representative called a "coding error" and corrected copies will be ready about the end of April. LCMS Clergy and Church workers are elegible for a 20% discount. I'm not sure about other denominations, but would be worth asking about. I'm looking forward to the cd version as the "larger print" paper edition is HUGE and requires a Bible cover that is not readily available in local shops. The Concordia price is reasonable $19.

Thanks everyone, for your interest in The Lutheran Study Bible.

We did have a little glitch and serial numbers were left out in production, but we caught it and only 45 or so people received a copy without a serial number/unlock code. We contacted these folks and provided the number they need, and we put the unlock code in over 700 copies of TLSB LOGOS edition and those copies are back in inventory, so we are again shipping. I've heard from at least a dozen people who have it installed already on their computers, and they are loving it.

The price of TLSB LOGOS edition is: $34.95. Rostered church workers of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod receive a 20% discount off that price.

I second that, as it permitted me to make my Pastor grovel. While he was on vacation, I ordered it for my Kindle and subsequently had it up and running on my iPhone app, even before our copies arrived on CD from CPH.

William, There is actually quite a large difference between the two.

The CSSB is a modest revision of a non-Lutheran set of study notes. TLSB is not, it is a thorough, from-the-ground-up new set of study notes, prepared by Lutheran pastors, professors, etc.

Looking at the Logos page, it would seem that about 2/3 of the 140-odd contributors are connected with the LCMS, and only a handful are connected with the larger ELCA. Would this mean that the Lutheran Study Bible would be expected to emphasize mostly the more conservative Lutheran viewpoints?

I ordered the new Lutheran Study Bible, I wasn't sure what to expect as far as the quality of the study notes and so forth. Boy, what a great job you guys did! I was very impressed by the articles the editiors choose to include, there were a lot of topics not normally covered in a sutdy bible. I was also happy to find Logos had a native Logos4 version to download.

I really have no interest to pay shipping on a DVD with a few megs of data on it. I really don't want the box.

I would echo Jim's request and ask you to reconsider the decision not to ever release it as a downloadable purchase. CD's are so yesterday. This planet has too much plastic in it already, and we all have too much "stuff" our homes. This CD would be something we'd use precisely once and then put on a shelf or in a box somewhere or throw away. If we can get the bits from Logos over the Internet anyway (which we do when we have a hard disk failure and have to update our resources), why bother with a physical CD in the first place? Logos has good security controls so that people can't steal a copy of the file if they didn't pay for it. So I don't know what Concordia's hang-up is about needing to ship a physical CD. It costs a lot extra for those living outside the US, which is now a growing percentage of Logos customers. I live in Canada. While the price for shipping isn't as high to Canada as it is for our friends in Europe and Australasia, it's still a disincentive. I would consider buying the Lutheran Study Bible for Logos but I won't now because there is no download option like there is for nearly everything else in Logos's catalogue. I'm not a Lutheran, so it's not a "must have" for me. But having an easy download option makes some things like this no-brainers even if they aren't "must haves." You'll sell more copies of the product if you let Logos make it downloadable. I guarantee it!

Paul, can you share with us why Concordia Publishing House is unable or unwilling or "whatever" to make this downloadable from the Logos Web Site???

I own the resource - The Lutheran Study Bible - and only paid about $7.00 U.S. postage from CPH to ship to Canada. Am a retired pastor and at the same time I also bought a copy for my wonderful young parish pastor in his 40's with a family and a mortgage that I have been introducing to Logos 3 and 4 with various occasional gifts to him, so I had two mailed to me. Both for $7.00, I think. He also thinks that it is outstanding. He already had a hard copy and has been encouraging parishioners to purchase a hard copy..... My wife owns a large-print hard copy which I also use because of her kindness.

However, it is one of the finest resources that I own. After careful consideration, I think that it is so good that it will become a "classic" as the years roll by. We'll see whether or not I am an accurate prognosticator (is that the word? I know I have been called worse ... *smile* ) !!! The research done, the scholars involved -- what a tremendous "opus"!

And, Paul, I am sad that people around the world cannot get it without hardship as easy as it is for us in Canada and the United States. It is too good a resource to deprive them of because of the heavy expense of delivering a CD overseas and subject to customs and other taxes when I think that it could be made downloadable.

When Logos sell a boxed package, they buy the product from the publisher such as Galaxie, IVP, Concordia and others. I would think the download option cost Logos something to be able to offer it, and they in turn would have to be compensated for it. For the publisher the upside would be access to a larger market for less margin on their end.

If that is true or not, I don't care! I just dont intend to pay 50% extra on the price of an item, to have a CD or DVD I don't want and don't need.

(I sometimes buy things from US web sites, and pay US$25 to get it sent to me. Normally this is for physical books I can't buy local, or electronic hardware or parts. Most sellers have a CHEAPER option for downloads, as they don't have to do anything other than take my money. It would be strange if Logos has to "charge more" for download versions, than for physical disks in a box.!)

For me, add US$25 for freight/P&P and maybe 2-3 weeks vs. no surcharge and only download delays (minutes to hours at worst).

I now move to buying mags online too. A whole year of downloads costs about the same as 3-5 issues in dead-tree format from the corner bookshop. And in the case of the computing/electronic ones I have interests in, often can get the source-code and other support files too.

Paper as a format to send out large chunks of data is long dead for many kinds of usage. And as others above comments, even CD or DVD is less interesting vs. download options.

I think the prospect of having to wait weeks to get something would be a bigger issue for me than the increased shipping. I'll pay more for convenience sometimes if I have to (or if I really want something badly enough, because I'm really impatient by nature anyway). I feel your pain sir.
