Search help

In John 10:36, one can find the word ἁγιάζω (consecration) with Jesus as an object. My Bible study group came up with that evidence from studying the Greek text. As a result, I want to confirm and see other uses with both the word and its root form of the same word. I did a BWS but did not know how to come up with this info. I am very rusty using the BWS. I did a search in the help menu. I would like to do a search in the Greek text of the New Testament that uses the word or its root form in John 10:36 with Jesus as an object. How can I do a search like this in Logos Bible Software?

If you have some type of interlinear, use the right-click at John 10.36, choose root, and whatever form you're wanting for your search.

I keep forgetting about interlinears. I was always feared away from those due to unnatural presuppositions. I will use it for this though as it is very helpful. Keen note DMB to the rescue always.

Additionally, if you scroll down in Bible Word Study, you will find the Textual Searches section. You can just click "New Testament" from that list. It is less efficient for a Bible search but it also has the LXX, Josephus, church fathers, etc. as other options.

I can explain yes. My professors at Liberty University, East Texas Baptist University, Faulkner University, and at Southern Seminary always told us never use interlinears until we had Advanced Languages under our belt. One of my Faulkner Professors would not even let us use Logos at all. They said to say not all interlinears are equal. Some just use the English words of a common translation (KJV, NIV) to represent each Greek word. They said using an interlinear can give someone the false impression that they understand the original language, even if they have no formal training in it. This can lead to misinterpretation and overconfidence in their reading. Learning a language should involve more than just translating back and forth between languages. A translation-based approach can limit a student's ability to think creatively and contextually within the language. Instead of understanding phrases or sentences in their natural context, students might rely too heavily on translation, which often misses subtleties and idiomatic expressions. They told me that relying on a text with an English gloss can be problematic and was a clutch. Now I am beyond that in Greek because I know it pretty well but not so much in Hebrew.

Presumably '...was a crutch'. Which is probably true for certain students doing certain studies. In other situations the reverse interlinear is a useful tool. The crux of the matter is that workmen need to pick the appropriate tool for the job and often that tool will be a reverse interlinear.

A wise man once told me that 'Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools'.

(Following that rule has got me into no end of trouble but I still like it [;)] )

I think in Logos, crutches are so pervasive, you'd need to just remove the right-click button on your mouse. Logos is Crutch Inc. and Crutchbook (Factbook) its 'Bible'.

And I rarely use reverse-interlinears. Mainly I want 'how translated'. Today, was jailor vs torturer (what happens to no-mercy people). And that illustrates the missing part of Logos ... how 'could' the text be alternatively translated. Translators tend to run in packs.

I have strong reservations regarding interlinears because they are often abused but in computer applications interlinears serve as the bridge between different domains of knowledge whether or not you explicitly refer to them. You can't understand your data without understanding the interlinear driving it. But interlinears are such an essential tool in linguistics and anthropology as to have international standards -- Dept. of Linguistics | Resources | Glossing Rules (mpg.de) What your professors should have done is warned you off the abuse of interlinears while teaching you their place in basic academic skills. And, yes, I loved George who railed against them.
