Jesus as the Door

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door," verse nine says. “If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:7–10). I want to use Logos to determine why He says he is the door and the OT understanding of this attribution. I tried searching and only came up with 3 results other than commentaries. The commentaries were not helpful as they did not really explain this as to why and how. I know this passage is one of the I am statments so it may just be about Jesus deity but I want to get to the OT meaning of this correlation as to why he would even use this in the first place. I would also like to know if there is any extra biblical reference to this attribution. The results I got were from these search strings below.

Jesus NEAR door

Jesus WITHIN 5 WORDS door

Jesus NEAR door WITHIN 5 WORDS John 10:7-10

I also did a Bible milestone search for John 10:7-10. bible: "Jn 10:7-10"

Could you search all commentariies with

    bible:"john 10:7"

    in the search field?

I got some commentary hits with that. I don't know if the results are all that pertinent to what you want.

Maybe some sort of sense searches would find bible verses. Like Sense:Supernatural Being NEAR sense:movable barrier

Just some ideas until you get a real answer.

Until you get some real answers...

Maybe try searching all commentaries with the following in the search bar.

    bible:"john 10:7-9"

Or maybe sense searching to find bible verses like sense:supernatural being NEAR sense movable barrier

    just some ideas.

I don't know if you have Semeia 53, which concentrates on John. Specifically, 'Johannine Metephor' discusses in detail John 10:1-18.  That and Raymond Brown's AYB volume on John are closely examined relative to door vs shepherd.

    1. Make a collection of all your reference books on symbolism, imagery, and metaphor
    2. run a smart search against that collection for symbolism of Jesus as door

Approaching this from a different angle.

1.Run a search as MJ has suggested but change search from a different perspective (see below - 1.a.& 1.b. ) ; or

    2. Search the OT testament text for all verses that contain "door OR entrance OR gate".

Texts referening to he door of a 'building' or entrance of a 'tent' or gate of a 'courtyard' or 'city' may or may not offier insight but limiting your search to 'door' only will most likely exclude passages utimately relevant to your passage.

Export the results to  passage list.  Do a quick run thorugh the list and immediatley, delete references that are clleary not helpful e.g. Gen 7:16 "... And Yahweh shut the door behind him". And work from there... maybe create some headings to 'categorize' the various verses you find, for example are they referring relating to the passover, or to the tabernacle/temple or whatever categories you come up with.  This approach will take more effort but if time allows it is a good exercise to go to the text first yourself, the primary source, before looking at secondary sources.  Being more familar with what the primary source will enable you to better evaluate the secondary sources rather than accepting them on face value.

Note: my collection is built using following rule: subject:(symbolism, imagery, metaphor, allegory, typology) OR title:(sybolism, imagery, metaphor, allegory, typology) OR mytag:symbolism

    MJ's will be different

1.a. search on "symbolism of door in the OT

    or

    b.  add the word 'christ' to the search term to get a slighlty different result.

You should be able to make a decent start by title and subject in your library ... or by title in the storefront. A rough collection rule that may need both additions and subtractions depending on your library is ((title:(image, type, symbol, metaphor) OR subject:(image, type, symbol, metaphor)) ANDNOT publisher:"Text Creation") ANDNOT type:media

This gives me a very sloppy collection of:

Do a quick run through the list and immediately, delete references that are Cleary not helpful e.g. Gen 7:16 "... And Yahweh shut the door behind him".

Hi Simons Brother (Should I call you Andrew??? [;)]

You have popped off a flashbulb over my head on that statement, got me to thinking, following a bit of a rabbit trail as it were.

You might want to rethink Gen 7:16 as not being helpful. I can't really explain all of my thinking because I would most likely violate the "No theology" discussions rule. I think I can safely say this ... When Noah entered in through the door to the Ark, he escaped death from Gods judgement of the flood.

Did I stay safe? If not this post can be deleted by the watchers if need be.

I assume you are referring to rule number 2: Please do not discuss or debate biblical, theological, or other controversial topics. Use one of the many web forums intended for these kinds of discussions.

However, I do wonder if the primary emphasis of this rule is on the words debate and controversial. It sounds to me like you are attempting to provide thought-provoking edification of a theological nature. I do hope such discussion is not off limits. I find such comments to be among the most encouraging and engaging of those I read in the forums.

I don’t think you overstepped the mark at all Roy.

Taking the OT aspects in another (two) directions, Kenneth Bailey’s The Good Shepherd (not available in Logos) has a helpful section on this passage connecting it to Psalm 23 and the role of the shepherd Which is highly likely in view in this passage in John.

Michael Morales, in chapter 2 of his Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord (available in Logos) also connects the idea of the door or the gate to the exile from Eden and sacrifice in chapter 2 of this book on Leviticus which I was reading earlier today. He does also connect it to the Noah episode mentioned by Roy above. For some reason it won’t let me format a link on my iPad so here’s the link to this book: https://www.logos.com/product/122908/who-shall-ascend-the-mountain-of-the-lord-a-biblical-theology-of-the-book-of-leviticus?queryId=64ada1eb43a795b9f83f8d3ee66df2f0

You are right in what you are saying that the implication of Noah going through the door of the Ark was he and those with him were saved from God's judgement.  And so, it might be right to consider this verse further.  In context of the OP's question, what one needs to consider is whether or not if it was a verse that came to mind when Jesus spoke of himself as a door, or does it point to a concept in the Scriptures Jesus was pointing back towards.?

But I'll leave it there as I was not really trying to answer the OP's question but trying to point them to one way, they could use Logos to search the scriptures to help move them towards an answer to their question from the primary source first before looking at secondary sources. So, my suggestion to not consider this verse further was more just an example of the process though I do understand the way I phrased it that it could be taken that I had thought well through that verse, and it fit into the category of 'there's nothing to see here folks, so let's move on'.

    Jesus NEAR door

    Jesus WITHIN 5 WORDS door

Jesus NEAR door WITHIN 5 WORDS John 10:7-10

I also did a Bible milestone search for John 10:7-10. bible: "Jn 10:7-10"

Your third search should use parenthesis: (Jesus NEAR door) WITHIN 5 WORDS bible:"John 10:7-10"

Better is INTERSECTS, which will find door when it is within a discussion of John 10:7-10: door INTERSECTS bible"John 10:7-10". You could refine that more as (door OR gate) INTERSECTS bible:"John 10:7-10".

But what I think you really want is (imag* OR metaphor* OR typ*) INTERSECTS bible:"John 10:7-10"

Actually, though, Logos has a guide section that is designed for this kind of study: lemma in passage. Here is that guide section opened to John 10:17 (insert link is not working as expected for me): https://ref.ly/logos4/Guide?t=System+Guide+Customizations%3a+Lemma+in+Passage+(Bible+Reference)&ref=BibleESV.Jn10.7  Click on θύρα and it will take you to commentaries that discuss that word in particular.

Also, if you are looking for possible background, consider a books search for intertext:(target:"John 10:7-10").

Make a collection of all your reference books on symbolism, imagery, and metaphor

    Examples of resources please?

Just do a Books > Smart Search for Jesus as door on   * -type:bible.(all books except bibles).

You can also look for Jesus as shepherd, etc.
