Is there a way on a fresh new install of Logos 5 to have resources installed on an external drive?

No. You can choose a Custom installation and put Logos where you want. To separate Resources after installation you have to rely on symbolic links to divert the location to another folder/drive e.g. see http://wiki.logos.com/Install_in_different_folder_or_drive (Windows only)

It would be very helpful to at least install Logos for Mac on an external drive
Logos libraries can be 100GB+ which can be too large for base storage on Mac devices.
Apple internal storage is very expensive and cannot be upgraded
Thunderbolt connected external drives are much more affordable0 -
