For those looking for a new laptop that works well with Logos

I finally had to break down and get a new laptop. I see a lot of folks on the forums asking what laptop would be good for working with Logos.

Well, I just got the Dell Inspiron 14 i7 2-in-1 and it's working great. So much faster than my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 i5 (which used to work great but is now over 7 years old and was getting slower and slower).

Here are the comparison specs:

Old Computer (purchased in 2016)

Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 (Limited Bestbuy Student Edition)

Intel 6th gen i5 processor (2 cores)

8GB RAM

256GB SSD

Nvidia GeForce 940M dedicated graphics card

New Computer (purchased in 2023)

Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 7430

Intel 13th gen i7 processor (10 cores)

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

Intel Iris Xe Graphics

Even though this one doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, Logos is still faster (especially the Atlas) on this new machine than my old one. I recommend this laptop for people wanting a 2-in-1 that runs Logos well.

Great choice for those who like Windows.

Personally I would have gone with a MacBook air which was on sale recently for approximately the same cost.

You should be quite happy with that. Good choice!

  • For macOS, Amazon has a Late 2021 Apple MacBookPro with Apple M1 Pro chip (16 inch, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD) Silver (Renewed) in excellent condition for $ 1,475 that runs Logos & Verbum well.

    Appears newer Apple M3 Pro multicore benchmark is 26 % faster than M1 Pro (15,385 / 12,208) while costing 83 % more ($ 2,699 / $ 1,475). Apple M3 Max multicore benchmark is 73 % faster than M1 Pro (21,150 / 12,208) while costing 137 % more ($ 3,499 / $ 1,475).

Geekbench browser search for 17-355u inspiron 14 7430 finds wide range of benchmark scores: e.g. single core from 864 to 2,539 (best single core is 7 % faster than Apple M1 Pro). Multicore Apple M1 Pro (12,208) is 30 % faster than the best Intel i7 17-355U multi-core score of 9416.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

I might be considering a 2-in-1, but I would think 16 GB RAM would be too little. I have 64 GB on my PC and I find that getting used up often with memory hog browsers with multiple tabs open. I probably would be more judicious about my use of browser tabs on a portable device, but still. However when I looked for Dells with even 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, it seems they don't make them. You can get a max of 32 GB of RAM, but those only come with 512 GB SSDs. I wonder why?

If you had to make a trade-off between more memory and a bigger hard drive, which would you choose? I'm always a "more the merrier" type whenever I upgrade to a new computer. Price is not an obstacle for me, and anyway there are some nice early Black Friday sales on already.

Did you look at the XPS laptops or just Inspiron? This one has a touch display, 1TB SSD, and 32GB of RAM. I don't think any of the 2-in-1s have more than 16GB of RAM, at least not the Dell 2-in-1s. Lenovo doesn't have 2-in-1s with over 16GB of RAM either. Maybe it's hard with such a small and light laptop to have all that RAM with a huge hard drive.

I always have browsers (sometimes both Chrome and Edge) open with multiple tabs open, and Spotify, Logos, and Kindle. 8GB was starting to not be enough, but 16GB is working fine.

The price of this laptop has dropped $50 since I bought it last week ($750 to $700). [:(]

I was comparing Inspirion vs. Latitude. Actually I wasn't even looking until I saw your thread. In fact, I didn't even know what a "2-in-1" was and had to look it up, and suddenly I felt I needed to have one. But I don't really. I already have a laptop that runs Logos well (and I don't use Logos on the road much anyway; I use it at home on my PC mostly). I was just thinking a 2-in-1 might be a cool thing to have to combine laptop & tablet functionality, since I have a tablet too (a smallish one) which I use for reading. But on most trips I don't take all three devices, just the phone and tablet or phone and laptop. When it comes time to replace my laptop, which could still be 2-3 years down the road, I might consider a 2-in-1 next time. Thanks for your advice. I think I just got a bit tech-toy giddy for a minute there. [:D]

About a year ago, I needed a new PC.  I happened to come across a deal that I couldn't afford to pass up. But it only had 12 gig of ram and a 512 gig ssd. Reluctantly, I bought it because of the price. It was cheap, real cheap at the time.  I figured if it didn't work out, I'd give it to one of my kids or such....

I compile programs (c++, Python), sometimes I run Opera, Firefox at the same time and Visual Studio which I always have Logos loaded. I also have 3 other utilities loaded up so I can bounce to them to do what I need to with them. And of course all of windows stuff is always loaded...

But even though the small ram and disk... (I do have 3 2TB ssd backup which I use), the computer has worked fine for me. I was actually surprised that it did and I was fully ready to get a bigger ram and disk computer if needed. But I'm still using the same computer.

Which leads me to wonder.... do we "over-engineer" our computers? Because of this, I think I have in the past and I think I have paid a priced in dollars for it. Believe me, I have more time than I do money.

I'm not advising anyone to buy smaller ram or smaller disk computers... Just what I've learned for me is that maybe I need to be more frugal when I do buy my next computer.

Yes, we do. It took me a while to start needing more than 8GB of RAM (basically seven years). And Logos worked fine, it's just all the other stuff I was doing. I normally would not have bought an i7 processor because I have never seen the need for one. But this one was in my price range and only $100 more than the i5. I really bought this one because it had a 1TB SSD drive and 16GB of RAM. I just wanted a little more RAM and a larger hard drive. These specs just happened to be packaged with an i7 processor. They've gotten better at making the laptops more efficient so the i7 doesn't get too hot in the small form factor like some older i7 laptops used to. Overall I'm still happy with this laptop after a couple of weeks of using it.

Old post I know, but I just bough a new Macbook Pro with M3Pro processor. It's weird, but Logos loads much slower than on my old Macbook Pro with an i7. Is this due to the fact that the architecture of the new chip Apple uses doesn't work as well with the older that current logos software? I noticed that Microsoft Word also takes a longer time to save a document with this newer and much faster MacBook. Weird.

Curious what Information about Logos.app shows for Application kind ?

FYI: my MacBook Pro with M1Pro has all Apple Silicon applications (have not needed to enable Rosetta II).
