Church fathers collections, knowing what you have

Why did the factbook tell me that I have nothing in my library on Theophilus of Antioch when I did own his writings in a collection of the church fathers? Also trying the library search box did not bring it up. I'm not well versed in using Logos yet, but it seems to me this should not happen. It seems not to be "powerfully linked" like the claim of the software, but is this my user error?

When I put Theophilus of Antioch into Factbook it brings up the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church but also indicates there are no resources in my library.

When I put it into my Library Search it brings up five discrete volumes.

I have no doubt there will be a technical explanation for something that should not need explaining.

I don't think this is user error on either of our parts.

The Factbook is a work in progress. It is not a reliable source from books yet as that data has yet to be curated.

I am a big Church Fathers fan, and to thoroughly search it, I have to set up my collections on my various resources, otherwise, a search on someone like Theophilus across my library can pull up a lot of noise.

If you haven't used collections before, they are not hard, but they are not obvious either. Check out this wiki page:

If you own "The Fathers of the Church" series, you can also search on it.

If you can tell us more about the resources you own, we can help you fine-tune your search. Searching is a bit of a trial and error, and as MJ says, Factbook has gaps.

For those who run Verbum, it has a collection of the Church Fathers built in.

    Just adding to everyone:

    • On monographs, I tag the repective churchmen, which groups them all and very visible
    • I use the PB that indexed the large church writings volumes by author
    • Like others, I tag the whole group for searching

I have Ante-Nicean Fathers Catholic edition and probably most or all of the Fathers thru picking up a few Eastern Orthodox legacy libraries. I use other apps as much or more than Logos, so I'm not very good yet at all the ins and outs. But I'm trying to use it and learn more how to, now that I have invested in so many more resources. Plus I am almost always looking things up on the android app, not the desktop version, but I do own Logos 10. I own too many things now in Logos to remember.

    @Angela Conley

I use other apps as much or more than Logos, so I'm not very good yet at all the ins and outs. But I'm trying to use it and learn more how to, now that I have invested in so many more resources.

Logos is like a Swiss army knife and with so many tools packed into one platform, you can learn something new every day about the software and the data sets and resources it interacts with. It can be fun and frustrating all at the same time. But the community here is excellent and is always happy to help provide examples of how you might pursue a study objective or develop a workflow.

You may already know this, but a simple search on your 'Early Church Fathers (Catholic Edition)' resources is below. In this instance, it pulls up 9 resources that reference Theophilus. If I do a search on my entire library, the results are very broad. This is where experimentation and imagination comes in of how to sift your library for gold. Collections and tags can help you sharpen results and save time.

It never hurts to ask questions to Smart Search as well. For example, I queried 'What were the primary writings of Theophilus of Antioch'? Sometimes Smart Search will turn up some things that you can base further searches on, both in Smart Search and Precise Search. As you see resources that mean a lot to you and your interests in Church Fathers, tag them and put them into a collection. A collection is like a special shelf in your library where you put your most important books. Don't forget favourites as well. I have a folder with favourites to my top Church Father resources.

I hope this is helpful… give us a shout if you have more questions. Have fun! 🙂
