Searching for words in both Hebrew OT and English translation. Can it be done?

I'm searching the LHI with the following string:

lemma.h:שׁלח BEFORE ( lemma.h:לְ.1@N OR lemma.h:לְ.1@R )

I want to use the LHI because if I search an English translation, say, the ESV, the results are often much more limited because the Hebrew is rearranged to match the english. However, I also want to find instances where לְ is translated as "for." I am unsure of how to get the best of both worlds. Any thoughts?

  • I feel I'm getting somewhere by saving the search results as a passage list. I now can switch to an English translation from LHI. I saw a video using the passagelist: operator, but I am unsure how to use when searching for terms inside the passage list. Just to clarify, these are the steps I've gone through:

    1. Search "lemma.h:שׁלח AND ( lemma.h:לְ.1@N OR lemma.h:לְ.1@R )" in LHI
    2. Create a passage list with said verses.
    3. Switch to ESV
    4. [This is where I'd search the passage list for the term "for" using "passagelist:" I'm just not sure how to put them together.]

Have you tried searching the Lexham English Bible for lemma.h:שׁלח BEFORE ((lemma.h:לְ.1@N OR lemma.h:לְ.1@R ) INTERSECTS for)

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I also want to find instances where לְ is translated as "for."

You will need to search an English version with Reverse Interlinear using this string: lemma.h:לְ WITHIN 0 WORDS "for"

Just tried this in NASB95, and it produced 4,812 results.

  • The recommendations have worked. Since I was filtering by morphology to include only nouns and pronouns, it seems that English translations don't like it. Under the steps taken above, I was only getting about a third of the number of verses the LHI was giving me. Filtering without morphology seems to solve the problem, and the pool of words has narrowed down far enough that seeing all words, verbs and nouns alike, won't be a problem.
