Interpretting Strong's word order versus numbering

Nuwbe question:

In Strong's Concordance is there anything to be made of the connection between two words that appear next to each other or is that strictly coincidence ?

There seems to be but i am insufficiently familiar to be sure.

It looks to me like in the case of 5318 to 5321 and thence onward it is alphabetical according to the English translation or maybe phonetic sounds.

    Shalom Alan,

The numbering system that James Strong devised for his KJV concordance is ordered according to the Hebrew and Greek alphabets.

The first letter in the Greek alphabet (alpha) has the Greek Strong's number #1 and the last letter of the Greek alphabet (omega) has the (Greek Strong's) number #5598.

The first Hebrew Strong's number has been assigned to the Hebrew word for "father" ('ab) which is spelled with the first and second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Hebrew Strong's number #2 is the Aramaic word for "father" which is spelled the same way as in Hebrew. BTW The fact that Strong did not index the words from the Aramaic portions of the Bible separately is one of several reasons why I do not recommend using Strong's numbers.

Since you mentioned (Hebrew Strong's) numbers #5318 to #5321 I would like to point out that #5319 and #5321 both derive from the same Hebrew root p-t-l (#6617).
