what is the best way to organize highlights?

I am having some confusion about highlights and how they interact with notebooks. In case it matters, I have several notebooks regarding different classes and topics, and I do export them and sort them by reference.

My understanding is that if I highlight something and the highlight is in a notebook, that it will also be included in the export notebook export. So to prevent this, I need to make sure the highlights are not in the notebook. I also heard someone say that highlights should be in "No Notebook." Is this correct?

That all said, I am working with a specific book and I have a notebook for this book. When I select text and create a note, it goes in my notebook for that book without an issue. However, if I then highlight a word in the book, that random yellow highlight ALSO goes in the notebook. I then need to select it and move it to "No Notebook" and continue reading.

So I guess I have a couple questions.

  1. Am I correct that highlights should be in "no notebook" since they will otherwise be exported with the rest of the anchors and notes?
  2. Is how I am doing it where I just select each highlight and move it every time to get it out of the main notebook the most efficient? I am hoping there is a better way since it is sort of distracting to stop my work and move the highlight to "no notebook" every 30 seconds.

I create a lot of notes and also a lot of highlights, so I want to make sure I am doing this correctly before I get too deep into it. Any clarity about the above questions and any insight regarding highlights in general would be appreciated.

Thank you.
