link to notes from other notes

Hi, whenever I insert a link from a note to another, the link will go to the right note but the position would never be at the first line. I always need to scroll back to the top.

It appears that the link contains various options, eg IsEditorFullSize=false IsSidebarExpanded=false IsTrashExpanded=false ShowFullAnchorText=false Sort=placement ViewMode=full etc. I experimented with various options, but could never get it to link to the first line of the destination note.

Can anyone help?

@Michael_H Yes, I have the same problem. Nothing seems to work to get the link to go to the first line in the linked to Note. It would be nice if it did.

Here is a link to a possible solution. I've tried it and it appears to work at times. I haven't checked it out thoroughly to figure out when it does and doesn't work.

I may be wrong but I believe the problem is in the way Logos does the "copy location". The "copy location" only copies the first line of the passage being linked to. Because of that it would take some work from the programmers to change all that. I would love to see "copy location" changed to be able to copy the actual location of what is highlighted. That would make a significant difference in that "copy location" would actually copy the exact location of the highlighted text.

Ah well… a guy can dream hey? 😎

xnman - To me, if Logos only copied the first line of the Note as the link-to-here location, once that was pasted into a link in a different Note, that link would only open the Note at the top. Right now that is the desired behavior, but how it is working. Logos seems to change the location based on more than one factor, which is beyond my discernment.

I agree it would be nice if the 'Copy Location' function captured a specific place within the Note; at least for people like us who have vey long notes. I am not sure if most people use Notes as long form text capture documents. It may be such that we are a minority of users. In which case, Logos has bigger fish to fry.

Also… I just copied one of my Notes into MS Word. It is 16 pages long and almost 6,000 words. It contains my notes and snippets of text from Article V of the Augsburg Confession.

A Docs Search for words in Notes behaves the same way as Copy Location when linking from the Results, but it provides some context.

I really, really appreciate the information you are giving me, Dave. I enjoy the chance to learn how Logos works. However, my 8 months of Logos experience are not keeping up with you. Let me describe what I understand from your reply.

If I am correct, you are saying that performing a Docs Search for words in Notes returns the same result as when I select Copy Location from the upper drop down in a Note. That is, the two actions provide the same results. (well, I have to actually create the link from the upper drop down, but I get it)

Then, what you mean here: “when linking from the Results” is that when I click on the word that the Docs Search found and displayed in its list of results, it takes me to the bottom of the Note in which it is contained. This makes sense, as it takes me to the bottom of the Note rather than the location of the word within that Note.

I think I’m following so far, because both actions take me to the end of a Note rather than the specific word in the Note I searched on. Therefore this is the same behavior I am seeing with a Link to that Note.

This is where I am confused. The “but it provides some context” phrase… You mean you are providing some context for your earlier statement in the other thread as to how the Copy Link function works. I get it. I am just trying to figure out what I can discern from this.

It appears like the functionality searches through the entire Note for matches. The function ends at the bottom where the function runs out of text to search.

I could compare this to past experience where I have seen programs that load a block of text to the screen, so the display shows the end of the block of text because it has loaded the entire file. If this is similar to your meaning, then it is linking to the Note, and displaying the Note in its entirety.

Or, I could be way off base. Thanks for following up on this, Dave.

@Michael Fillian Hello. Logos Notes does not actually "link" from one Note to another. And try as I might, I cannot get a "link" to go to the middle of another Note where I have a long Note. There is no way to do that, that I can find. So, we have to "improvise" so to speak.

@Dave Hooton's suggestion of using Search and search in Notes does work, but even that is a"search" not a "link". Search may be good for finding a particular Note, but it really doesn't work as a "link" to another Notes. I'll share something I do with all my Notes. It's a bit of work, but I feel it's worth it to me. Let me illustrate:

Say I got some Notes —- Note 1 and Note 2 and Note 3, etc. Now I want to link them such that I can go from Note1 to Note 2 to Note 3 and in Note 3 I want to link back to Note 1. Here's what I do:

In each Note I have the following lines as standard form, and all my Notes have this standard setup. The (#) indicates the number of the Note in that chain or topic list. For example, Note 1 would have (1) etc. That way I know where I am at in that topic. Here's the standard form of my Notes:

Topic line (what Note is about)

Text of the Note etc…

Next (#): Verse or topic of Next Note.

Prev(#): Verse or topic of Previous Note.

After Note 1 and Note 2 are set up, go to Note 2, highlight the first word of the Topic Line … Hit "Cntrl C" in Windows, to copy the "link". Then go back to Note 1, highlight Next then click on the "chain link" icon in the dynamic tool bar and a blank cell will open. Click in that blank cell and paste the "link you copied" and click "Save". Now when you click on the word "Next" in Note 1, it will go to Note 2.

In Note 1, highlight the first word of the "Topic Line", then do "Cntrl C", then go to Note 2 and highlight the word "Prev" click on the "chain link icon" for the link, right click in the blank cell that pops up and then "paste" then click "Save".

I know, it's a bit of work, and I know it's a "work around" but… I now have links in all my Notes such that I can go from one Note to the other Note and back to the original, very quickly.

I also arrange my Notes by topics which I put each topic in it's on "Notebook"…. such that say my Notes on the Holy Spirit, is in a Notebook called "Holy Spirit"…. Now I can study or use my Notes when I am doing something with the Holy Spirit. And I can go to Notes, click on Notebooks and find Holy Spirit rather quickly, if I want to see all my Notes on the Holy Spirit.

I like Notes in Logos and I use them almost daily as I am adding working with or editing them as I study. It may not be for everyone, but with the way I do it, it works for me. One of the main reasons I like Logos Notes is that when I am using my Logos Mobile App, my Notes are there… I find that very handy.

I know, it doesn't solve the issue of linking to open a Note in the middle of the Note of a long Note. Hopefully one day, Logos will fix the links in Notes to be just like when I link to a book (which does open to the middle of the book). But until then… 😎

Sorry to confuse you, but I was not suggesting that Search and Copy Location provide the same results. I was trying to convey that Docs Search is as vague as Copy Location when trying to locate a specific part of your Note.
Search is definitely not a facility for Note to Note linking.

xnman / Dave – I am not intentionally being obtuse.

Dave – Okay, I get what you were conveying to me. When I am not sure of something I’m reading I tend to parse it out and focus on each phrase. This is especially true for technical or rule-based communications (at one time I wrote technical instructions & procedures).

xnman – I think I am doing something similar. I've uploaded a screenshot of a portion of a 'Level 3' Note linking to other 'Level 3' Notes, one for each Article in the source book. The difference is that I am using the ‘Copy Location’ from the drop down to get a link.

Is this similar to your usage? In your example you used 'Prev' and 'Next' links, but I think we are using them similarly.

How do you copy a Link using ctrl-c? When I use ctrl-c I copy the text of whatever I highlight rather than its location. Oh. Now that I look at ‘Copy Location’ in the drop down, it does refer to ctrl-alt-c. Maybe that is what you mean.

I am with you on using Notes. My two main tools are Notes and Links. These are what makes Logos so valuable. I don’t use many Notebooks, as they are not nestable. My Notebook list looks like this:

I use Notes for a "sort of" nesting by linking from Note to Note. I learned this from a Jason Stone video on YouTube. I have defined four levels of Notes. Level 4 is for highlighting important points in the source document only. My actual notes are either in a Level 2 or Level 3 Note depending on the complexity of the source document. So my Level 4 Notes only contain reference information. Here is a Level 4 Note:

You can see that my only link is back to the Level 3 Note where I keep snippets and my own thoughts on what I highlighted.
