Too many marketing emails

Yesterday I received SEVEN marketing emails from Logos. One was so desperate it suggested I pre order a commentary in Dutch then take out a MAX subscription to be able to use auto translate to read it! Seriously guys? Someone in marketing needs to work on inner peace and calm down.

Yeah I didn't count them but yesterday noticed the huge stack of mails in my email account I send subscriptions to. They had been sent one after another. I stay on the list for the birthday month coupon, but this is getting to be too much.

Yes, this. Clearing out Logos emails is a daily job! As someone who is responsible for newsletter and 'marketing' emails for a Christian ministry as part of my day job, I have much I could say on this topic re how Logos are, well, not serving their subscribers very well in this area, I'm afraid.

By far the biggest single improvement Logos could make for their email subscribers can be boiled down to one thing: A much better preference centre. I only have a few boxes ticked in there, and yet clearing out Logos emails is a daily task, as I said. There are whole categories of emails they send me that I truly don't want. And a preference centre should be just the thing to archive this. But it doesn't. The connection between most emails I receive and the preference centre options is almost non-existent to my eyes, unfortunately. ("Which preference centre selection made me get this email?") I seriously suspect that a single preference centre selection is responsible for me basically getting spammed. But I do want some of those emails, so I'm not prepared to deselect it. Yet.

If you're reading this, Logos, please take this on board. You'll have people who are happy to be on your email list if you make it your goal to let them control exactly which emails they do and don't get from you. This is currently not nearly as possible to do as you may think it is, from the fairly big preference centre you have. Cheers.

People have been giving feedback to Logos about this for quite sometime.

I would love to get an e-mail when Logos is having a sale. That would be interesting and helpful. But Logos seems to not send out those e-mails until the sale has already been going on for 5, 6, 7 days. Well by then I'm already fully aware of the sale. I'd have appreciated an e-mail when the sale started to let me know about it. I don't want one a week later.

If you want the birthday coupon, you have to be set up to get e-mails. But you get no say on what you get - one check of a box gets you subscribed to multiple sets of e-mails. The only way around it is to flag them as spam in your e-mail client.

The thing is, when you flood people with too many marketing mails, they lose their effectiveness.

I subscribe to the mails for the birthday coupon. To me it was fair trade-off; I got a discount, and Logos sometimes got me buying something I might not have because of a mail. But now there are so many I delete the majority of them unopened. My eye is rarely caught by an appealing title I didn't know was available. They are actually making me buy less now.

I liked getting things in the past… when it was manageable. But it increased to ludicrous level at some point. I turned them all off. They are probably losing sales but that was really my only option. It became a daily chore to sift through them all.

I know Logos has to make money and I'm all for that; it keeps them in business. But I hope they take our comments to heart and make changes.

I used to subscribe to get the birthday coupon, but the sheer volume of them reached the point where it just wasn’t worth it . I tried sending the emails to another folder, but still had to delete them all every week. So I unsubscribed altogether from emails. I probably miss out on some sales now, but life is much more peaceful. I’ve unsubscribed from a whole lot of other companies’ mailing lists as well, and have head space for other things now.

Seriously, though, I wonder how Logos monitors the effectiveness of its emailing. There doesn’t seem to be any co-ordination of the email campaigns limiting how many emails a user gets. The emails about completing sets with dynamic pricing were helpful, but the emails trying to sell me books I already own? And why not do a weekly digest email with the main offers - I’d probably subscribe to that, but the noise just became too much so I turned it off.

The more examples like DMM's, the more it looks like really old software, or really desperate marketing.

You wonder the ROI on better targeting. Or just see what sticks.

I don't see any of it. Ironically, I'd love targeted selling on Logos.com. I waste a lot of time there.
