How long should it take for highlights to sync

I opened a book on my iPhone and macBook. I killed both apps. I reopened both apps. At this point, things should be working as expected. I made a highlight on my iPhone. I pressed "sync" on my macBook twice. The highlight appeared. I created a new highlight on my macBook. Before I could figure out how to sync the mobile app, the highlight appeared.
If your goal is to see the sync as quickly as I did, you might be disappointed… but I don't know why it would matter. It should sync quickly enough that if you make highlights, they will appear on the other device when you use it next. Do note, however: You must provide both the device you make the highlight and the one receiving the highlight the opportunity to actually sync. If you make the note on your MacBook but don't allow it to sync, it won't (of course) show up on the other device.
I was a bit surprised at how quickly the note appeared on my iPhone … It used to be common that you would have to kill the app to force a sync.
