Logos on eInk devices.

So, i know the question has come up. and it seems possible. I am just wondering what are things one needs to know about the eInk.

Obviously, its the android app and not the desktop app. So there are those limitations.

But is there anything that doesn't work on these tablets, tools, guides etc.. Because of the UI or just limitations of the screen.

the devices I am currently thinking about are the BOOX Go 7 color gen II or the BOOX Note Air 5c

I don't know that the devices play much into it, beyond andriod or eInk.

I had the Boox Go 7 color gen II before I returned it, but not because Logos wouldn't run on it. It does work pretty well as long as you can live with the lower performance on eink devices. I bought it solely as an ereader to read my Logos resources on the go. For that, it was great. The physical page buttons worked as long as you had the Logos app set to scroll vertically, and highlighting was good because of the color.

But, you'll have to live with the outdated version of Android. It runs Android 13 and can't be upgraded. This could be an issue if you intend to hold on to the device for longer than Faithlife supports it. Faithlife typically supports the 5 latest versions. Today, Android 11 is the lowest version it supports.

I have the Boox Go 7 B&W and love it. At the time I didn't think color was worth it, but to be honest it would be nice to see what color highlights I'm using. I was worried about the reported darkness of the color screen, and didn't have anywhere to test them in person before buying.

It's frustrating that Logos won't spend 4 hours of dev time to fix the physical buttons. Every other program I read in has an option to allow page flipping through the volume buttons, which on Boox enables the physical buttons to work as page flippers in 3rd party apps.

You have two options to use the physical buttons in Logos:

Use them to scroll up and down instead of flipping pages (this is OK, but I find it sometimes chops off half a line, and the animation is pretty ugly on eInk.)
Install a third party app, but this requires jumping through some hoops and is prone to breaking randomly, requiring you go go in and re-do everything.

The third party app process was a pain, so here are the exact steps:

In Boox, go to Apps, then Play Store, and install Logos and Key Mapper.
In Boox, go to Apps, long press on Logos, select Unfreeze. Long press again, select Optimize, go to the Others tab, and select Page-turning in the Customize Buttons row. Hit the back arrow to go back to Boox Apps, then long press on Logos, select Color, and set Background Color to 0 (if you don't do this some buttons in Logos won't be readable. Might not be a problem on a color device, but definitely is for B&W.)
Repeat everything in step 2 for Key Mapper.
In Logos sign in to your account, then go to More, Settings, unselect Scroll view, select Show footnotes. (You may also wish to select a bookish font like Literata and change your Text size, Line spacing, and Margins options to your liking. Since I have a B&W device, I also turned off Use red letter. I'd recommend playing with the Boox EinkWise settings until you find the Refresh Mode you prefer.)
In Key Mapper, do all of the first-time setup steps (if I remember correctly, there are three or four) and then follow the on screen directions to create a key map. You'll need to record pressing the physical button (this part will not work if you haven't done the Key Mapper first-time setup steps or if you skipped steps 2 and 3 of these instructions) and then assign an action. The only Action I could get to work was a Swipe, which I set to "1 finger from coordinates 500/500 to 900/500 in 200ms" for the top button, and "1 finger from coordinates 500/500 to 100/500 in 200ms" for the bottom button. Set both to have a constraint of "Logos Bible is in foreground".
I can't remember if I had to reboot after doing the above or not, but it's probably not a bad idea.

If the above sounds like a lot, it is, and most of it I figured out through trial and error. I would love advice if anyone has a better way, or can tell me what keymap to use instead of swipe. Also, it breaks every now and then requiring you to re-do some of the steps until you figure out what specifically broke. Logos is the only app I've encountered that required all of this hooplah. Every other reading app I've tried either works out of the box, or has a simple one-click "Allow navigation by volume keys" option in the settings.

Sorry, I got off on a tangent. To answer your specific question, I haven't encountered anything that works on an Android phone or table that doesn't work on the Boox. I still prefer using a computer for serious work, but for reading the Word I love the Boox.

Thanks everyone. I did read about the page buttons somewhere. It is good to know that aside from that the devices work faily well.

My main use would be for reading and being able to make highlights,so I am thinking color. I dont think i would try to make notes on it.

I am torn between the Go 7 and Note Air, for size. And a bit price. The Note Air does come with the stylus though, and is andriod 15.

to bad LCD just are not great to read on.
