How to exlude resources from library search

I'm creating some a collection of all my trusted books, and I want to exclude either that collection, or a tag, from the Library so that I can see what is not currently in that collection.

I read somewhere if you use "-" it doesn't include those resources eg. -tag:books, but it doesn't seem to work.

How can I exclude a tag, author, collection etc?

The minus sign should work as below

But if you are trying to exclude more than one category I find it works better using the ANDNOT operator

@Graham Criddle You have a typo in the syntax that is doing the opposite of what you want. There MUST NOT be any space after the minus sign.

So use: type:monograph -mytag:toread to find all monographs without the tag.

Or, less typing, and finds all books without that tag: * -mytag:toread

You can chain multiple exclusions together as long as you don't omit the space: * -mytag:toread -author:sproul

Also a minus needs a 'plus' (contra the default list with no plus). That took me awhile.

Yes, you need to "subtract" the set of resources selected by that filter from something. The easiest "something" is * meaning "all books".
