How do I mark a forum as "read" without having to go through every item?
I think the notification bell has a bug, if that's what you're asking. It won't remove the red notify icon even though you have gone through your notifications. At the bottom of the list you have to manually click on "mark all read".
You can click on the notification settings to change how you get emails.
That is currently not possible, but a solution for this is very much in the works.

it seems like they've promised this feature forever. I will believe it when I see it, but until then, I assume they don't plan to add it. Prove me wrong.
We haven't promised it, because it wasn't slated to roll out until just recently. We will communicate more as we have a specific ETA, but I can at least say we have a solution actively in the works.
