L4B3 Install Report

Three machines --

3.00 GHz P4, 32 bit Win XP/Pro, 2gb RAM, Custom built machine
1.99 GHz, Core 2 Duo (T7300), 32 bit Win XP/Pro, 2 gb RAM, Dell Vostro 1500
2.20 GHz, Core 2 Duo (T6600), 64 bit Vista Home Premium, 4 gb, Dell Studio 1737

Installed L4B3 on the 3 gig P4 last night before I left the office -- all is well. Smooth install, processed the update, prepared the library, and indexed my system.

Got home, and opened L4 on the Vostro, found the link to install the update, and fired it up. Again, all is well. No hitches what so ever -- quick indexing. However, I did open and then close out L4B3 and when I went back in to open it again I got small dialog box that said it couldn't connect to Logos. I clicked connect a couple of times and eventually it worked well.

Then I moved over to the 64 bit Vista machine with 4gb RAM. This is the machine I originally did a DVD install on. The Install for L4B3 went ok up to a point. As I went to bed at 1:00 last night, the L4 icon in the systray said it was at Stage 3 of 3 on the install. I got up this morning and at 8:15 it still said Stage 3 of 3. I finally used the Task Manager to close everything associated with L4 and restarted the program. Once again it said there were updates to install, I said yes, they installed, and then the indexing moved right along (it was still running when I left the house an hour and a half ago).

Initial observation of the behavior of L4 on my three machines -- and this is just my two cents worth. Both of XP/Pro machines seem more responsive. For double the RAM on a 64 bit machine, I'd rather have the older OS with less RAM -- they're both working better.

That's the scoop on the install -- I'll post a couple others here in a minute on what I'm finding / not finding in L4B3

One issue with your 64bit Vista (and mine) is that by default Vista schedules defragging in the early morning hours. You may want to check your task-scheduler to see whether that was going on.

Another thing I've found is that sometimes my power settings are changed. I check them so infrequently that I don't know when this happens. But not too long ago I found that the selected power setting was shutting down the hard drive after a given amount of time of no use. Check that setting. In order for anything to happen unattended the computer (and the hard drives) have to be awake.

Finally, if you have Vista set to download and install updates automatically, it may have done that last night (I had a few ready for me this morning - but I have it set to always ask me before downloading).

Anyway, my Vista 64bit seems a lot faster than some of the other machines on this forum for both installing and indexing.

Thanks for the report, can you post the logs with the one that was at stage 3 of 3 for a long time (if you still have them)?
