New Mac User

Greetings, everyone. I set up my new iMac yesterday and really looked at the option with VM Fusion and Parallels of installing Win7 in the virtual world. I did download both and will try installing Win7 when I get a Full Version, since you are not able to use an new upgrade DVD. If I am wrong in that assumption, please correct me in that belief. I have the 21.5 Dual Core 3.06 mHz model and so far have been pleased at how easy it is to navigate OS X. Went with the wired keyboard and mouse instead of the wireless. Printer installed without any intervention on my part and that really surprised me, given I have been a Windows user forever. But I did use Ubuntu Linux for a long time as well. Apple really is better....but, don't tell Bill that.

Therefore, I am going to install the latest L4 for Mac to give it a whirl. If I am wrong about the Windows installation, may install it there as well. Why do I need Windows? Well, I have alot of other software that I use in website development, Office, etc. Eventually I will give RapidWeaver a shot and will play around with iWeb.

But, so far the experience has been excellent and I used to bad mouth (confession) Apple, mostly out of ignorance. LOL.

I have an upgrade version as well. I didn't want to have to try to install XP first so I did find a way to do it. If this is your case as well, then this site should help you.

Richard, we may be twins in this matter. Not two months ago I too bought my first iMac because I was tired of iTunes taking up all my system resources on my 8 year old Dell... and I've got an iPod now (I'll blame that!)

I went with the 27" Dual Core 3.06 and a 4GB ram upgrade to 8 gigs 1067 MHz DD3. I too opted for the wired keyboard (with keypad!) and the wired mouse (even though they say the wireless accessories don't suck batteries too quickly.)

I don't plan to ever run Logos in Windows through parallels but one of the developers was wise to re-remind us that the mac version is still in Alpha. To me this honestly means I get to build with each upgrade and understand each new feature as it is added.

What I'm most impressed with is the indexing speed. I opened Activity Monitor during the latest index and saw that both cores were fully dedicated to indexing yet I was only eating up 2 gigs of ram. That left me free to do whatever with the remaining ram. It also only took 4 hours after installing Scholars Silver to fully index (It actually took twice as long to download on my cut rate internet [:P])

I'm very pleased with everything thus far. I even picked up Office 98 and Adobe 5 Web on student discount.

Lastly I took my old Dell flat panel monitor and hooked it up to the mac via an Apple mini display port to dvi adapter I bought at Best Buy. I've dedicated the Dell screen entirely to Logos. The hardest thing I've yet to adjust to is the Finder file manager system. I'm not sure how it categorizes everything just yet... and I keep looking at the bottom right for the time...

Okay, DeWayne, the upgrade DVD did work selecting the Custom Install? If so, then I will give that shot.

I am not sure if Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion works the best. Will research more tomorrow from work before making the decision. We have virtual desktops in some of our offices at work and eventually everyone will be in that world, mostly for security reasons.

Paul, yes, I too was a little concerned about the time spent indexing, but I will install the latest MAC Alpha release to see if it will suffice for now. Our main PC is Windows 7, but I wanted to see what the MAC world was like, so that eventually I will wean myself off the PC for the most part.

As long as you have media for an older version of Windows, you can install Windows 7 upgrade on a fresh install. You just have to insert the older media when prompted. It can even be on a network drive!

What you saying, if I understand correctly, is that if I had another full edition, say XP I could upgrade that using the Win 7 as one would normally do, but I can't merely install the virtual product and then install Win 7 in the custom mode as I have done before with Home Premium Upgrade DVD? I have seen on another site where I can purchase or use OEM software from a PC which would have the full Win 7 software, but I am not sure how that would work since this is a MAC, not a PC. Maybe I will have to look for Windows XP somewhere and perform the necessary upgrade from there, after making sure to install all the SP's.

If I remember correctly, I installed using the upgrade DVD normally like a full DVD. Then I used method #2 and did the registry hack to activate.

Observation: Microsoft Vista added desktop sidebar with gadgets, including clock and calendar. Windows 7 allows gadgets anywhere on desktop (not restricted to sidebar).

For what its worth, and not to start a battle between the two, but ... I have used the latest versions of Fusion and Parallels extensively. I started with Fusion. Used it with Logos for some time and was getting frustrated with the speed. I received a discount offer to try Parallels. I was very impressed, and surprised, with the quite noticeable speed increase over Fusion. I also like the Crystal mode of Parallels, which hides most of the Windows interface (thank goodness for small blessings). There are occasionally some minor display anomalies, but they are very minor and inconsequential.

This is my experience as of the latest release of each. Of course, it is all subject to change with further releases. However, by that time I am hopeful that the Mac version will be at parity with the Windows version.
